The Worst Questions
« on: Sep 25, 2014, 08:32 pm »
Hi Everybody,
These are my two least favorite questions that I get asked all the time:
Non theatre people: What do you study/want to do?
    Me: Stage Manage.
    Non theatre people: What's that?
And despite being asked this question almost daily I have yet to come up with a concise answer to describe this crazy, wonderful, sometimes hellish job (lifestyle choice).

I just say that it's kind of like being the air traffic controller of the theater world.

I like to say "I say go for a living" and leave it at that . . .

but the cocktail party answer I have is "I work in management of live entertainment events, on the production side, help facilitating the directors vision and mainting the show during the run."  Leave it at that.

I generally say I work as a Stage Manager, and simplify it by saying that I make sure everything that you see happening on stage: I make sure that happens on time, safely and fix any problems that come up.

Obviously there is more to that, but there is also more to being an accountant than working with people's money, but that answer suffices for the general population. People just want a general idea of what box to put you into in their mind.

I've yet to figure out a succinct way of explaining what I do around here.

Me: "I run a community forum for stage managers."
Them: "For who?"
Me: [lengthy explanation]
Them: And there's a market for that?
Me: We have several thousand members.
Them: So you must be making a fortune off of that...
Me: Well.... erm...

Uncomfortable pause...

Me: Can we change the subject please?

What do I do? I facilitate director's, actors and designers artwork as they express it to the audience.

How? Eh. You'd get bored if I explained it.
