Noob to this Network
« on: Jun 09, 2013, 04:56 pm »
Hello,

My name is Tyler and I'm at my first summer stock as an ASM with the Banyan Theater Company in Sarasota, FL. I am in the last semester of my senior year at Kansas State University where I'm concentrating in stage management. I've ASMd: The Adding Machine and I've SMd: A Nervous Smile, Time Stands Still and Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo. Once I get back to Kansas I'll be prepping to SM Columbinus. While I'm new to working in summer stock as an ASM, I'm not new to summer stock. Two summers ago I was a Scenic Intern at Utah Festival Opera and last summer I was the Scenic Intern at Cortland Repertory Theater.

I'll be graduating this coming December and I'm nervous about moving into the real world... shocking, I know. I'm a little concerned that there will be very few theater companies hiring for positions that start in December/January, or do I have the wrong idea on that? At this point I would love to move to Chicago and get in the world of stage management up there but I don't know many people and I'm currently poor, but when has that ever stopped someone?! If Chicago doesn't work out, I'll move to where ever a company is willing to give me a job. Feel free to give me any advice and thanks in advance!

Tyler

Tyler!!! Hi.

There is an amazing wealth of information on this site- I'm sure it will help you as it has helped me. The search bar in the upper right corner is super helpful to find answers to specific questions.

Best of luck this year- and I'm super jealous about Columbinus- great show.

Hello and welcome to SMNetwork, Tyler.  Theatres are hiring all of the time, but it is definitely good to start sending out your resumes early.  Check out our Midwest/Chicago board on Regional to connect with Chicago area SMs.  Try to identify some companies you are interested in working for and start networking.  Best of luck on your final semester.  Hope you find the forum to be a useful resource.

Hi Tyler! Welcome!
I currently live in Chicago, I've been here for a year now (I graduated last May). There is a TON of theatre here, and they all have different schedules. There will for sure be shows in December & January. When I moved here, I didn't know anyone either. But I've made many connections, the theatre community here is very close and supportive. Check out http://offstagejobs.com/jobs.php?region=chicago for job postings. I've also done two (paid!) SM internships with The Goodman Theatre, they have new interns on each show (vs. season long): http://www.goodmantheatre.org/Engage-Learn/internships/Apply-for-an-Internship/
There are many other internships at other theatres as well.
Feel free to PM me if you have more questions about Chicago.
