Introducing myself!
« on: Feb 27, 2014, 06:38 pm »
Hi! I'm an amateur SM at my high school. I'm working on my 2nd production as an SM, and I'm hoping to go into it professionally. My 'funny tale' is that one time when I was doing The Crucible, our Proctor didn't show up to rehearsal for the first 2 or 3 hours. I got to read his lines, and it was during the courtroom scene so I got to yell "It is a WHORE", among other things. Getting to read lines for actors that aren't able to show up is the best part of rehearsal, sometimes!

Welcome. The Crucible is a great show that I have seen WAY too many times, but still love. Actors not being able to show up stops being fun once their paycheck is on the line and it makes your job a bit more stressful in normal rehearsals. But just wait till you get to do some professional understudy or replacement rehearsals. Some SMs hate doing them, some love them, but the SM stands in for most of the other characters in the scene besides the actor who is rehearsing, it makes you a bit schizo but it can be a lot of fun.

I was always torn during understudy rehearsals as to whether I should sing and dance or just mark everything. Fight choreography became my favorite part of working in understudies, as there's really no way to teach someone a fight by just marking - you've got to commit to it. I'm always up for a bit of fake violence.

Out of curiosity, why are you a "secret" SM? Do you not want your family to know? Do you call the show in code? Are you a mild-mannered newspaper reporter by day and a heroic crime-fighting stage manager by night?

Thanks for joining us!
