Greetings from Minneapolis
« on: Dec 27, 2018, 12:03 pm »
Greetings from snowy Minneapolis! I've searched for many topics on the site throughout the years and since I'm finally joining Equity this Fall (cue excitement and terror at quitting my full time job), I figured I should actually make an account since I'll have even more questions! I've been stage managing for 20 years and for the last 10 years have been a member of a company in town. I mostly do straight modern plays, but I've done devised work and huge musicals in the past (my mantra now is whenever something is hard I just remind myself that I've SMed Les Mis).

My tip for newer SMs: never stop learning new skills! I'm always asking questions about anything being done that I don't know about. Ten years ago I started asking questions of my lighting designer company member and started helping him do hangs, and now I also pick up lighting technician work! I volunteered to do props on an easy show once and now I do props for every show my company does. I kept asking my sound designer friend how to do things in QLab and now I'm a pretty good QLab programmer. The more you know, the more problems you can solve on the fly, is always my philosophy. Especially if you are like me and run ALL THE BOARDS during shows, it's great to have intimate knowledge of how everything is programmed and any shortcuts the boards can do so if something goes awry you can improv your way back on track. And it never hurts to have extra skills to sell yourself to new companies or pick up extra non-SM gigs in between shows.
