Resume Question
« on: Dec 17, 2007, 03:21 pm »
Hello fellow stage managers. I have a question concerning my resume which I would greatly appreciate your opinions on. Due to the fact that most of the resumes I send out these days are through email, my email address is currently in the form of a hyperlink and was wondering if this is indeed a good idea. Is this a help or hinderence to those who do the hiring?

Thanks,
Liam

I think this is another case of people worrying a tad too much about their resumes.  I worried myself sick with my resume and was guilty of it too.  Not to pick on you liamproche as I understand you want the best shot at the jobs you're applying for.  My school of thought on resumes is this: the goal of your cover letter is to get the person to look at your resume, the goal of your resume is to get an interview, the goal of the interview is to get the job.

Rarely will your resume make or break getting a job (unless it's a really hideous  resume).  I've seen some people with really ugly resumes get hired because they've got what it takes and they have a good interview.  I've also seen people with some really nice resumes not get hired because they interview poorly.  The interview is the biggest factor in the hiring process.

To answer your question I don't think it matters a whole lot.  Make your resume look good and present the information in the order you want the person to read it.  Here's to hoping your resume gets you the interview!
Get action. Do things; be sane; don’t fritter away your time; create, act, take a place wherever you are and be somebody; get action. -T. Roosevelt

I disagree.  Though it shouldn't matter to a T the formatting of your resume, our field has a great deal of focus on how paperwork looks, so your resume is just another example of that paperwork.  Plus, people won't be responding to you from the actual resume, but more likely from the cover letter that the resume is attached to.----and if you don't already, you should always be putting your resume in PDF format...that way it doesn't come out wrong on other computers.

The other thing is, the cover letter is the gateway to the resume is the gateway to the interview is the gateway to the job....One little thing at each of those points that's not JUST right can prevent you from getting to the next stage.  Make it SOOOO presentable that they can't NOT give you an interview. Every little thing matters...and if it turns out that it doesn't matter and you did it anyway, no biggie, but if you don't do it, and it turns out that it matters...biggie.

I think the hyperlink on the resume is not a great idea. Keep it consistent...Make it look like a hardcopy resume would look.  No one will mind the extra work of having to highlight, copy and paste if they actually do want to use the digital resume itself to respond to you. And it looks cleaner.

Be careful - not all people read cover letter first.

I look at the resume long before I read the cover letter.  If the resume doesn't have the level of productions I want, I am not going to read the cover letter.

I'm throwing my vote in with Kevin here . . .It won't make or break a job offer.  I kind of think it's a nifty idea if you are sending out an electronic version.

Is there a way to turn a word document into a pdf file?

On a mac, you can print to pdf from word.

There are several freeware programs for the pc that can do the same.

Here's an easy way to do it:

go to this website, enter your email address, upload the file, and it will immediately send you a PDF of the file.

I prefer CutePDF Writer, which is light and ad free.  It adds itself to your list of installed printers, it just behaves as a virtual printer instead of a hardware one.

I wouldn't say a hyperlink helps or hurts the presentation of your email address. It's entirely a matter of style.

Personally, I like a clean look without the hyperlink and it's blue text in underline. But I'm a hard-copy person; when I go to email you, I'll retype your email from the printed resume. I know it would be easier to <control> click the email hyperlink, but I guess I just insist on doing it the hard way.

But I certainly do agree with Matthew that the resume gets scanned first, and only the candidate's experience looks qualifying will I read the cover letter.
