PA work in NYC
« on: Jun 14, 2006, 03:34 am »
Ok I am moving back to the city (New York that is) after completing my MFA. I wm really interested in working as a PA for some of the larger theatres/production companies around town to get some more experience with production contract and large shows ect... However, I don’t even know how to begin pursuing this path. I know how to get SM work and where to find those postings, but PA's I have never seen that listed anywhere. Do you just send resumes to production companies or PSM's? Where do I begin I have searched this forum and haven’t seen anything about the position except in regional theatre, which is where I have been working for the past 2 years. Though I wouldn’t know how to get a PA gig in Regional theatre if it weren't through a University anyway.

There are a few ways to get PA gigs in NYC.  Part of it is who you know, of course so making contacts with other stage managers is always a good thing.  Most of the companies in the cities you can write to directly and work as a PA, many of them do pay a stipend.  Some of the larger companies hire PAs through the auspices of their internship programs.  Good companies for big shows to write are Roundabout, Manhattan Theatre Club, Lincoln Center, and The Public.  They all use PAs on a regular basis.  Go to their websites for more info, or call their admin number to ask who to address the letter to.  I also tend to buy the Theatrical Index every few months to see what new is going on and send letters to GMs or the listed production stage manager.  I haven't had much luck with writing general managers, but I have had luck with writing PSMs and theatre companies.  Best of luck!

I am currently interning in NYC.  You could try Art Search or Backstagejobs.com.  Also http://www.rfpny.com/index.php   is a good company.  I couldn't land a internship there, but seeing as you have an MFA you probably are a lot more experienced then me.
