Reasons to Reject a Job Offer
« on: Nov 20, 2013, 06:01 pm »
While stumbling about the internet I found this article:

http://www.salary.com/8-good-reasons-to-reject-a-job-offer/

I think that some of these points can really apply to when Stage Managers are looking for not only 'filler jobs' as the article quotes, but also when evaluating job offers in the theatre. I generally stick to a rule I learned from an actress I knew: A job has to have two of the three following things for me to accept:

1. A good project that I'm excited about
2. Good people that I'm excited to work with
3. Good pay that I'm excited about

It can be difficult to find all three in one position, but evaluating if a position has two out of those three has worked well for me in general. I think the article brings up some really interesting points to think about though- what are your thoughts?

My big thing is pay. I have a hard time accepting jobs that I will need to pick up a full time day job with.

I don't mind picking up some part time work to subsidize myself, but if I'm not getting paid well enough to fully support myself, you should at least provide housing for the duration of the gig.

That's my two cents.

I would argue a job that doesn't pay is not a job . . .

I too have a point system
1) Good People
2) Good Pay
3) Good Project
4) Future Life
5) Calendar (Does this fill in a gap on my calendar)
6) At Home versus travel (this is becoming more and more important)
7) Resume Value . . . this is becoming less and less important, although it does way in

If it doesn't score at least a 4 . . . then, probably pass

At Home versus travel (this is becoming more and more important)

It is amazing to me too how much more important this is in my life now. I google maps a job before I even apply now. Having a real home instead of living out of my suitcase is so much more important.
