Just received a response - this also seems to be like just fulfilling the AEA requirement . . .

Yeah - me too, standard "thanks, going in the files" letter - ah well. But at least we entered the files....I think.

Could one of you pros please explain the "AEA Requirement" to us laymen? And if there are any ways for a regular non-union schlub who's looking for a way in to tell if a posting is serious or just "satisfying the AEA Requirement?"

You never know . . . to be honest . . . but in general, if a well established theater company that produces regularly posts looking for SMs for an entire season - that's a red flag that they are fulfilling a requirement.   For example, La Jolla Playhouse knows where to find stage managers, often using Broadway Stage Managers for their larger shows, and isn't short knowing where to find stage managers.

Usually, I would say . . . anytime there is a posting that is posting the entire season is farming for resumes, and fulfilling their requirement.

No, having worked for large regional theater and have been on the receiving end of these resumes - it doesn't mean your resume will go unnoticed.

So does AEA require them to post notices any time they're hiring?

When a season casting notice goes out, there is often a request by AEA to ask where Stage Managers can send their material.

The AEA Audition Department/Committee is getting smart about negotiating into contracts a requirement for theatres to publicly say how SMs can apply. That being said, I'd appreciate seeing a phrase like "accepting SM resumes for future reference (or future openings) only."  That way we'd all know what we are doing, up front. Sort of like an actor knowing a role is already cast, but auditioning as a possible replacement or understudy.
