Temporary Housing & Transportation
« on: Mar 20, 2008, 10:36 pm »
I'm currently researching internships for my time off school (7 weeks this summer) and I have found an internship that I have a good chance at getting (at least I like to think so). My problem is it is in California and I am in Missouri. I have to provide my own housing and reliable transportation. I have to get more specific details on if I have to have a car or can use public transportation, but that is a different topic.

I know many stage managers will travel where the work is. My question, for those who have experience in changing housing from city to city every couple months or so, is this: How do you go about finding a place to stay? What websites or other methods do you have for securing housing?
XX. The only valid excuse for missing one's cue is death.

This is a very good question. I just got an internship that has a housing option, but being married, that situation won't work for me. I'm waiting to be contacted by the Assistant Company Manager who is going to give me a list of some housing possibilities. Company Management could probably do something similar for you, as I'm sure you wouldn't be the first person who lives out of town that they want to work with. I'd ask about it during an interview.

Use Craigslist.com  There are always some great deals if you look around and a lot of them are month to month.

Also during the summer most College dorms rent out their dorm rooms for a week or a month for fairly cheep.

http://www.couchsurfing.com/

I used this site when I was bouncing around on the road.  However be very careful with it as there are some unsavory people on it.  I'm 6' 3" and 240 lb so I never had a problem.  Check peoples ratings and talk to them before you stay.  I would always trade out tickets for concerts for a nights lodging.  Most people on the site are fun loving hippies with good hearts but use caution.  Then again i still have couch surfers stay at my house every once in a while so I guess I didn't mind it that much.

Peace,

Chops

Where in California is the company you're looking at?

If it's near any universities, you might want to check out the college newspaper for classifieds - you can usually find a nice handful of student-priced sublets for summer months.

PM me if you're looking at a company in LA or the San Francisco Bay Area :)
