Interview Questions
« on: Nov 05, 2009, 10:20 am »
I have a few interviews coming up and it has been a while since I have interviewed for a SM related job, would anyone like to share some of the questions they use in interviews or have been asked in interviews so I can 'get in the zone'...

Much appreciated!

Leslie

1) Why are you a stage manager?  How did you get into it?
2) How would I know you are a having a bad day?
3) How would you describe your stage management style?
4) How do you work in a team?
5) What is your communication style?
6) How do you deal with conflicts with in the artistic team?  Within the cast?
7) How do you like to note performances?
8) How do you deal with stress?
9) What makes you an ideal candidate for this show/position?
10) What makes you NOT the ideal candidate for this show/position?
11) Favorite show that you have worked on?
12) What do you like about stage management?
13) What do you not like about stage management?
14) Favorite part of the process?

What is the airspeed velocity of... (sorry couldn't resist)

I SM at the community level but I do manage a department of people in my day job.   So I'll try and adjust some of my go to questions to the SM world.

Who was your last boss?
If I told them I was hiring you, what would they say?
If I told the people you worked with, what would they say?
Talk about the worst day you've ever had at work.
Talk about the best day you've ever had at work.
If I told you to do something and you knew you couldn't get it done in the time-frame allotted what would you do?

I ask a lot of "Give me an example of a time when you dealt with (blank) and how did you deal with it?"  These situations include dealing with an unmotivated crew person, balancing multiple responsibilities at the same time, mediating a disagreement, things like that.  I find that asking for specific examples gets past the couched, rehearsed answers that we all prepare before interviews.

What is your greatest strength as a stage manager?  Your greatest weakness?

I remember getting these two questions in one of my earliest interviews.  I was prepared for the first, but not the second.

Matthew has covered most of the other questions I've been asked in interviews.
