SOCIAL, Round 1: Facebook vs Yelp

(1/1)

Maribeth:
To network with your friends and colleagues in the theatre community? Or to find the best coffee shop in the city where your tour has stopped? This, my friends, is the conundrum of the Facebook vs. Yelp first round matchup, the first in the Social Division.

On Team Facebook, you have a quick and easy way to invite friends to Invited Dress, find your next SM job, and share production photos from your latest and greatest show! On Team Yelp, you can find the best place to grab breakfast around the corner from the theatre (and note which bagel shop to avoid). A tough matchup, to be sure.

Make your selection and tell us which social media tool has your vote.

Polls will be open until midnight EST, December 3.

KMC:
Facebook will probably win this one, but I voted for Yelp based on the fact that I struggle to find a productive use for Facebook in the professional world.

Yelp, on the other hand, is incredibly useful for its purpose.

Michelle R. Wood:
Hmm, I don't really use either one (though I'm growing steadily convinced I'm going to have to join FB for networking purposes, and in film there are things I can't learn about any other way than with FB). Actually, my social media network of choice is Twitter, which is great for learning about new theatre opps (and even getting free tickets sometimes).

PSMKay:
Michelle, Twitter will be up in Round 2, which starts tomorrow and runs through Saturday. It's up against Tumblr. Make sure to come back and cast your vote when round 2 starts!

I'm not sure I agree that you need to join FB for networking purposes.  I'm actually quite jealous you've held out this long.

Granted, I'm no longer in live theatre, but I have two distinct categories of social media profile - Personal and Professional.  And, as the line from Ghostbuster goes, don't cross the streams.  My LinkedIn and Twitter are for professional purposes.  LinkedIn for networking, Twitter for discussing, engaging, discovering.  Facebook is 100% social, I don't do anything professional on there.  If I deleted my Facebook my professional networking would not take a hit.
