Community, Round 1: Gaff Tape Vs. Staples/Paperclips
« on: Nov 30, 2012, 07:46 pm »
The Community Division starts with well-loved competitor Gaff Tape up against the longshot rival merged team of Staples & Paperclips. Staples & Paperclips brings a unique combination of a slippery fade on the defense and long-term pierce and hold strategy on the offense. Industry favorite Gaff Tape brings a flair that has earned it value and notoriety among the backstage community, although its cost, relative anonymity outside of the arts, and scarcity can be a detriment.

Yes. Although in some cases paperclips will suffice, and they're far less expensive. Besides, who can forget the 54 uses for binder clips thread. Those do fall within the realm of "paperclips," I'd say.

Can paper clips turn your black shirt with white screen printing on the front into a show black?

Damn straight. Gaff tape...beat 'em down!

It just occurred to me, fond as I am of staples, that I never use them. Stuff just goes in my binder (PLUGGING THE HOLE PUNCH).

Gaff tape on the bottom of shoes stops them slipping. On my current show, the costume department went all over town looking for something, and nothing worked better than my gaff. <off topic> Any suggestions? Gaff costs way too many $$$$. </off topic>

If slipping is the only issue and the sound of sticky soles is acceptable: coca cola and water solution. The high sugar content will make it near impossible to slip but if you stand still too long, your feet might stick to the floor.

How can this even be a contest? Gaff tape is THE tool. Can a roll of staples hold my coffee cup from tipping over? Can a Paperclip fix my shoes? Not a chance!

I love my tape.
They call it Gaff
It changed my life.

Please.

Do not laugh.

Well, it is a first round matchup.  The road will get harder for the GAFF assuming it pulls out a victory in this round  ;)

I voted Gaff tape for obvious reasons. I'm incredibly interested in why people chose staples/paperclip combo.

I did "A Behanding in Spokane" and the guy who played Carmichael (the one handed man) refused to tape his splint with anything other than gaff tape (an expensive assessory, but he was adamant).

Also, I can just gaff tape some pages together if I was missing the challenger. I don't think the actor would have liked to have the splint stapled to his arm...

Gotta be GAFF even though I really love my staples too. Paper clips? Not so much...

I enjoyed reading the binder clip article.
Gaff tape is so very useful.  Especially, when you have both black and white gaff.

I love Gaff - and all the pretty colors! It's my dancer's choice for taping marley seams, as dance floor tape is too slick for them. I have a steady supply of 2" Olive Drab, Black, White and Gray (not counting my rainbow of spike). And when it's not on the dance floor, I'm using it to repair set pieces/cracked paint in a jiff, covering flower stems (because every ballet has a bouquet in it somewhere...) and more!

GAFF for the win!!

Gaffa IS the black gold. Really you have to have sympathy for Staples/Paperclips - they gotta know they are just going through the motions even walking out into the arena this round. Staples/Paperclips may rule the roost in the office or even in early rehearsals but Gaff works it where it counts in our biz - the rush to the stage finish. Hard to see a serious challenge to Gaff in these early bouts so its should be fresh in the final match ups. My money is on Gaff to go all the way.

Interesting. I'll try that next time. Thanks.
