TOOLS: GaffGun
« on: Nov 05, 2014, 02:29 pm »
My department chair sent me this link. Nice idea. I saw a video where it has a longer handle, thereby saving one's back while taping down.

Now, if it can fit any/all gaffee/spike tape sizes, then I would consider spending the $200 on it.

Now, for Christmas, can we find one that does the same thing with marley tape?!

I think this is a pretty common tool used by most dance companies, or theatre that host dance regularly:

We're planning on bringing one into my office to test it out. They're back ordered for a while but I'll let everyone know how it works once we get it. I've already heard some good and also not so great things about it.

They sell a set of three different size adapters for $18, I haven't tried them so I can't speak to their effectiveness, but I can't imagine it being horrible.

I've heard rumors of a new distribution apparatus for them so this could become more widely available soon.

The rumors are now true. If you guys are interested in the Gaff Gun, shoot me a message and we can talk about it. I'll probably quickly transition out of the PMs here and email you but you can PM me if you want more information. I nearly jumped for joy when we finally closed this deal up!

I'm not one to believe factory demo videos, but the demo video is legit. It is really that simple to lay down the cables as demonstrated.

We just got one at my school. Although I haven't had a chance to use it myself, I have seen cables that were taped using the Gaff Gun. From what I can tell it is fine but not amazing. It wasn't all that neat. With this being said, I don't know if when it was used the adapter was used to that it worked as it should. I suppose that it got the job done. I don't know how much time it actually saved. I will be tapping down a dance floor with it in the next month so it will be interesting to actually use it myself.

Most of the reviews I hear are mixed. People either love them or hate them.

I played with one for a bit, and I could see it being useful for like one-off concerts and events, but not really for theatre, where you lay stuff down once and maybe re-tape it a few times.

I just don't think it's worth the upfront cost. I'd rather pay an PA with the money I spend on one to do it and be able to do other things as well.
