THE Sharpie topic
« on: Feb 12, 2009, 10:48 pm »
I searched and searched, and can you believe that there is NO thread devoted only to Sharpies?  How on earth can we have missed this?

Love 'em, hate 'em (?!), can't do a show with out them!  Sharpies rule the world.

However, did you know that if you mark white gaff with black sharpie and leave it on a wall for a while (like labeling a costume hook for a show), when you peel it off, the black paint that was under the sharpie will come with, leaving an outline of the words you wrote?  Use masking tape; it won't mess up your paint.
Or that if you mark on pale skin with (I think it was) green sharpie, and wash most of it off, the residue will glow under black light?  (I discovered that one doing marker tests on myself for a stage tattoo that had to be washed off between scenes, in a show that also had an, unrelated, black light.)  I'll bet someone will find that tidbit of trivia useful someday!
And of course, you can temporarily touch up any chips in black paint on the stage or walls.

This post brought to you by the fact that I just cleaned out the pen cup on my desk (procrastinating cleaning the hamster cage).  There were 8 Sharpies in 4 different colors and 3 different types.  No wonder I could never find a Sharpie around the house when I needed one, OR fit all my pens in the cup.  Gods, I am such an SM.

;D I NEVER KNEW those tidbits! Ha!

I love Sharpies.  I covet them too, as best I can...they tend to walk away during tech week...hmmmmm.

A good friend of mine has a sharpie collection of no less than 50 colors....it kinda makes me drool a bit. :)

There has definately been a sharpie discussion before but I thinknit was inside a broader topic - favourite toys or something? Anyway, you can never have too much discussion about sharpies right?

Love of Sharpie to me are fine tip (the extra skinny felt tip type) and I also love the Sharpie paint pens (always keep a gold a silver on hand). Of course I also keep my standard Sharpie (regular fine tip black) around as well as my set of four mini (red, blue, green, black). Basically I help keep Sharpie lines in business by keeping my variety packs on hand.

There is nothing like a Sharpie for those ultra quick touch ups (and fixing white spots on otherwise black shoes.

Clickable Sharpies are the greatest invention ever.  As are the minis on keyrings.  Both have gotten me out of numerous fixes.

Good to know about the green sharpie/black light.  That's something I'm sure I'll use someday, once the right project comes along...

During tech my sharpie doesn't leave my belt. I have the cap attached to tie-line then attached to one of those old school metal shower rings (not circular, the ones that look like a light bulb). This way it can be on my belth the entire time. I also use a sharpie (instead of a pencil) for a spike stick. So my sharpie will have all the colors I need for the show. That way, during tech, I can throw down a spike and label it quickly.

TomorrowToday, why do you always keep gold and silver on hand?

Mainly when I need to write permanently on most surfaces in easily seen colors. They are slightly reflective so I can write reminders on the back of flats or on badly lit props tables or dressing areas. I have found some really great uses. I even write on black notebooks and such. I originally bought them for a directing presentation I needed to do and just keep them in my kit.

That's a fantstic idea. I used to use a dowel, now I'm going to use a Sharpie.

I like to use the silver Sharpies to delineate spike marks in an unobtrusive way. I'll put a silver dot in the corner of the spike; the iridescence helps to reflect light but cannot really be seen from the house. They are also good for labeling on black gaff.

I also always keep black, silver, and a few colors.  Great for permanent spikes.

I remove sharpie from skin with nail polish remover.  It's best if the remover has acetone.  Wipe the skin with a cotton swab. I'm not sure if it still glows in black light.  I'll have to check that out some time.

I just discovered Sharpie Pens and don't know how I went through life without them! I wish they came in more colors though, and were click- able.

My other favorite Sharpies are the ultra fine tip click-ables.

I just got an e-mail (yes, i get e-mail updates from Sharpie) about their new Stainless Steel Sharpie. It's actually a Sharpie that has a stainless steel barrel and ink refills. It looks kind of cool but my boyfriend's issue with his sharpies is when the tip gets smushed or not as clean he stops using them or "donates" them to the scene shop or someone lol.

It's gonna be available in March but they have limited edition pre-release ones on E-bay to raise money for charity.

I don't know if I'm sold on them because of the possible tip "smushing" issue...lol. Unless somehow they've designed a much sturdier tip to keep it's shape. We'll have to see...

One of my favorite discoveries regarding a Sharpie was that you can "erase" it with rubbing alcohol.  It works on most hard surfaces, like plastic and mugs.

Sharpie now has clickable pens out.  I got a set of them and Love them.  I got the pens right after they came out and now the clickables are out and I have no clue how I functioned before.

Recently I also bought a Sherpa(r) you can buy them from here http://www.paradisepen.com/paradise/dept.asp?dept_id=21076 it's a cover your uniballs and sharpies.  They are great!  makes your sharpies look more professional if you are all dressed up.
