Running Shoes
« on: Jan 18, 2010, 09:57 pm »
I couldn't find this covered elsewhere, but perhaps I missed it. It's been a while since I've run a show backstage and I've discovered that I don't have any crew appropriate shoes. What kind of shoes do you wear backstage? I'm particularly interested in all black shoes. Thanks!

I have a black pair of Timberland boots.  They have lasted well over a year for me doing crews, set construction and lighting.  I have also owned a regular pair of black sneakers in the past.

Nurse shoes! They're easy to find usually at Walmart/Kmart/Target and aren't very fashion forward but are usually lightweight compared to boots, slip resistant, and comfy to stand in for hours on end. :)

They're always carried in the basic "nurse white" but they usually have a few black pairs hanging around as well.

Bonus: they're usually $20 or less so if I ruin them on a show it's not the end of the world.

Black steel cap dress shoes with air cell soles. Found them at a safety shop - I have spent 28 hours on my feet in these things without being completely crippled at the end of the day.

I've been wearing solid black Puma running shoes for a long time (can't find them online, but they're the only matte solid black shoes I could find) because they're very comfortable  and have arch support. HOWEVER, I am switching to a pair of MBT's (http://us.mbt.com/) because I have back problems, and they're designed to take pressure off your spine. I've been wearing a regular pair for a while now and really like them, and they FINALLY started making all-black pairs!

Those look amazing, but a little pricey for my blue collar wallet.

If I'm backstage as an ASM or running crew, then my black work boots - I have a pair of Magnum Classics which I absolutely love - they have toecaps which are fibreglass or something - not entirely sure what but it means they're lighter than steel toecaps.  They're super comfortable, leather so they breathe and I can wear them for 16 hours no worries.  Only problem I have is that my current pair, which I bought in the UK, are wearing out and I can't find them here in New Zealand!

Back when I was still in school I would actually wear my Capezio Dansneakers.  They were lightweight and supportive, but had very good protection around the toes, due to that built in box for toe stands they had.  They were also pretty durable, lasting through four years of both dance classes and running shows in them.

Yeah, but if you really want them, I suggest finding one of their stores...I got my first pair at one of their stores in a discontinued style, so they were maybe $45. Not bad for shoes I wear nearly every day.

I keep two pair of 'show shoes'.  One pair of black boots - not reinforced toe and one pair of black sneakers. For the sneakers I usually get a pair of Dr. Scholl's.

I wear a pair of black earth shoes.  They are lightweight, comfy and flexible enough to throw in my work box.

I think Puma is the best option that you can choose. However, the price is really expensive. They are comfortable to hear and very supportive.
