Keeping Spike tape down...
« on: Mar 05, 2007, 05:06 pm »
Hey All--

I've just started rehearsals for Into the Woods.  Myself and my ASM's taped the floor and two days later it is being torn up like crazy.  It is a tile floor and there are 2-4 acting classes in there during the day and then us in there at night.  Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to get more life out of my spike tape.  I thought about dance tape, but was told that it would be hard to get up six weeks later.  Any help would be great.

After you put down your spike tape and you're 100% sure that's where it's going to live, cover it with clear tape on top. I don't know if it'll hold as well on tile but it's worth a shot.

Yes, but will the packing tape come up easily?  Will it leave a residue behind?

You can also use Gel Tape (aka J-Lar, sometimes called clear Marley tape though it's not really Marley). This is probably the best stuff, but it isn't cheap.
Get it from BMI Supply - www.bmisupply.com

I do clear duct tape sometimes, and I also use clear packing tape.  Clear packing tape has a tendency to come up, especially if you are doing a show with a lot of dancing, but it's good for shows that don't involve a ton of choreography or a huge cast.

I use clear packing tape, fold a corner so it's easier to remove, then pull it off at an angle. Usually I'm lucky and it pulls the spike tape up with it. The problem with it is it sometimes leaves a bit of discoloration on marley, for whatever reason.

clear duct tape over and/or staple gun the glo/spike tape in place
Make voyages.
Attempt them.

I wouldn't recommend stapling a tile floor!!

All of my glo-tape gets stapled down, with the longest staples I can find. And then it gets covered in clear packing tape, just for safe keeping.

Be careful with packing tape, and marley tape -- its very slick! Make sure the actors know it's there.
Stage managing is getting to do everything your mom told you not to do - read in the dark, sit too close to the TV, and play with the light switches!

Some places are analy retentive about their floors - make sure you check before putting staples in them.

Clear packing tape works well, I've never had a problem with it.
