I hit the jackpot the other day and found steel capped volleys! Black ones at that! I actually cannot describe how excited I was! A lot of places I work at have policies requiring tech'ies to wear steel caps as part of their OH&s and I usually make my crew where them regardless so now I can wear steel caps and still look cool!
Ehh....you've hit the classic issue right on the head.
Steel caps do not a safety shoe make.
The integrity of the whole shoe is much more important than just the caps.
Say something hits the edge of the cap and ends up on the material just behind it, if that material is thin and the object is sharp you are in serious trouble.
Thick leather(real or synthetic) and steel caps make a good safety shoe.

I found a pair of black slip on suede shoes at K-Mart for $9.99 - so comfortable and I just leave them at the theatre.  Granted - I have to wear boots back and forth to the theatre (love the snow in Vermont) so having something to slip on is nice once I get to the theatre.

In warmer weather and wearing all day - I have a pair of black Vann's walking shoes.  Also very comfortable and I can walk or stand for hours in them.

I personally go with a brand of marching shoes called MTX. I think they look much better (ie. less dorky) then Dinkles and they are amazingly comfortable and durable. The main reason that i switched over from tennis shoes is it's hard to find a decent priced pair of all black tennis shoes that are properly made so they don't kill your feet, legs, or back.

I like Tread Safe http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3933676

They are used in restaurants mainly.  One could get away with them being dress shoes if need be.  But they are quiet, and are easy on the feet and its hard to slip in them...hence the name.
