PROPS: irish car bombs (beverages)
« on: Jul 08, 2010, 11:36 pm »
Alright. I'm usually pretty good with food props, but I need some help.

I'm doing a show where two actors drink Irish Car Bombs. It involves pouring a pint of Guinness, then dropping a shot glass with half Jameson, half Bailey's into the glass and chugging the whole thing.

The guys make them onstage, pulling the ingredients from behind the bar. Besides the ingredients, part of the look is the fizz when the shot is dropped. I'm hoping to tint some root beer for the Guinness, and that a drop in will make it fizz up a bit. But the rest of it...I don't want anything too gross or hefty since they do have to chug it quickly.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: clarified the title so that it doesn't look like we're being rude. - PSMK

I personally would like to bring a tortoise onto the stage, turn it into a racehorse, then into a hat, a song, a dragon and a fountain of water. One can dare anything in the theatre and it is the place where one dares the least. -Ionesco

Well shoot, if it were me I'd prefer the real thing ;)

How about some milk (soy, nonfat, whatever your cast requires) with a touch of chocolate syrup for the baileys.

For the whiskey, tea?

Rootbeer + milk + tea sounds pretty disgusting.

Tough prop drink!  Hopefully someone can put forth a better idea than mine.

Building off of the root beer idea.  Maybe just tinted water for the whiskey and condensed milk, thinned out a bit and tinted for the Jameson?  In my mind that would give you something similar to what you end up with when you make a root beer float and the ice cream melts into the root beer.  In theory that sounds good enough, but who knows what it might end up being.

(thanks for the edit, Kay. I was a little tired when I made the original post!)

After talking about this with my consultant (boyfriend)...I think Manhattan Special, a coffee soda, is going to be the stand-in for the Guinness. It's very dark AND slightly thicker, which I think will look better.  With this, I think the condensed milk might taste pretty good.

I'll keep you posted on what we end up doing...this is one of the more complicated props I've dealt with in a while!

This is probably too late but caramel color and water gets really dark. If you can't find the pure caramel color (usually bought from spirits makers), then pick up gravy browning liquid in a worchestershire size bottle at the grocery store. This is basically liquid caramel color.
To get the foam, I've used Fee Foam for Guinness before. Not bad. Not great but better than just water. If the guys have to chug this, the caramel color is best since it's tasteless and only like chugging water.
Google "fee foam" to read about it. Available at Amazon.com ..

Thought I'd add a follow-up in case someone runs across this in the future.

We found pint-like glasses that have a decorative design on the side that curves in, meaning less liquid. (The actor has to chug two of these in a pretty short period!) They're being filled most of the way with decaf root beer (actor preference) with some added caramel coloring. The shot glasses are also shorter and thicker- less liquid, again. We're dropping in shots of condensed milk. I've been told "it tastes like a root beer float!" and seems to be going over (down?) well.

Thankfully he also has time to run to the bathroom before his next scene if need be!
