If you have the money to spend then surefire is the best bet, but the are expensive as...... But if you are looking for allaround usefullness i recommend, like everyone else, the minimag. Rugged cant break design affordable around $9.00 U.S. and usually come with belt loop holder and 3 extra bulbs. They also have a nifty bulb holder built into the base. I personally own three. One for my kit and two for my belt, that way if I loan one i Still have mine. they also come in a variety of colors  ;D

I used to buy the mini-maglites that twist on and off but they kept getting accidentally turned on in my pocket and the batteries wouldn't last long

does anyone else have this problem?

if i store it in the provided sleeve on my belt does this fix it?
"This time for sure."

The sleeve helps a lot but it does sometimes come on. I just keep a constant watch out for it.

A maglite's performance (battery wise) often depends on the batteries used. The ones that came with my maglite (Duracell alkaline IIRC) lasted 6 months (used quite for about 10 mins a day I would say). Then I replaced them with cheap alkaline batteries, which I had to replace every 2 or three weeks. Different batteries are suited to different purposes. Have a bit of a google for what sort of battery you should use for torches - I cannot remember off hand because I switched to rechargable alkalines to save money.

As for preventing "switchons" I find that by using rechargeables, and changing the batteries every week, it does not matter if my maglite switches on, however the pouch does help to prevent them.

Ok, sorry to revive an old thread here - I didn't want to start a new one, but wanted to bring this up as a point again:

1) I love my MiniMag. Bought an LED conversion kit from www.thinkgeek.com that included blue and red gel filters, plus a "fancy" replacement endcap that allows for 3 different brightness settings, 2 strobe settings, and sporadically blinks with a SMALL red LED so if you've lost/dropped it somewhere in the dark backstage, it's easy to find again. As for batteries, I usually snag the leftover Duracell ProCells from our Mic packs since they're only used for one performance and then go in a box to sit until they're needed (for Flashlights, 2-way radios, etc.). They seem to last quite a while in my MagLite, so I can't complain!

2) I was going to start a new thread inquiring about the usefulness of Headlamps, but I think this thread answered it pretty well. From what I'm reading, the Petzl E49P is a good one (three brightness settings, a "flip-down" red filter), but I was curious if anyone had personal experience with any other brands/models that they absolutely loved/hated?

I have one of the Petzel headlamps-taktika, I think.  It has interchangable lenses (the blue is almost a UV lense), various output settings, and runs on AA's-I really like it when I am doing high work/under the stage/confined anything.

I also have a Surefire-excellent brightness.  I use the Aviator, which in addition to the halogen bulb, it has 3 LED's (mine are red, as theatre use is secondary for this device, but blue is available).  Downside is the expense-both the flashlight and the batteries.

And the ubiquidous mini-mag.  I have the LED conversion, with the button switch on the end.  I also have a bit of blue gel cut to fit the lense.  This is by far the most common used, but the others have thier purposes.

I doubt this will be much help because I dont remember the name of the flashlight but it's awesome for the size (which is the size of a pencil...maybe a bit wider)  and is easy to use in the dark when you're fumbling around for things. But the thing that got me was the size. It's LED, very bright and can be put in a pencil case...its wonderful :D

I have 2 favorites:

1. My mini Mag, with the bite-right topper. Great for those fly-by-night techs (FringeNYC comes to mind) where there aren't enough goosenecks to go around.

2. A River Rock LED light. It's small (about 4.5", 11.5cm in length, maybe 1.5" diameter), wicked bright and just great all around. Apparently they are sold at Target and are actually made by the Mag folks, but I don't see it on their website.
Companions whom I loved and still love, tell them my song.
