Fake Braces
« on: Aug 21, 2010, 01:33 am »
An upcoming production requires a cast member to be wearing braces.  I am wondering if anyone has any first-hand experience with fake braces.  I am aware of options online, but I'd like some opinion first.  Were they easy to use? Price? Did you use something pre-constructed or made of a paper clip? Any safety issues? Any sanitation issues?
Thanks!
-Max

This is probably left to a pro crafting - as you are dealing with body to the teeth, being inside someone's mouth - and could lead to all sorts of problems.

Don't try the paperclip method...this is now my elementary-school friend ended up with REAL braces.
I personally would like to bring a tortoise onto the stage, turn it into a racehorse, then into a hat, a song, a dragon and a fountain of water. One can dare anything in the theatre and it is the place where one dares the least. -Ionesco

You should really go to an orthopedic surgeon - one of a few reasons - the mouth is a highly corrosive environment which has a very fast track into the blood stream - you don't want to be dissolving "bad" things and throwing them into the blood stream - the other main reason is that if you don't get them properly made, there is the risk that an actor could trip with lovely sharp bits of metal in their mouth - a paperclip through the cheek hurts... A lot.
