Dropbox Teams

Update for Dropbox, Dropbox teams.

The price isn't free, but it work like a charm. The company I work for just swiched from a common single shared account to teams. Our basic rule of thumb is if it's not in Dropbox, it doesn't exist. I suggest everyone at least try the free trial.

I split this from the original Dropbox topic as I feel the two solutions (dropbox individual vs dropbox teams) are a different enough product to warrant separate discussion.

It seems the folks at dropbox have been listening (maybe not to us, but we can dream, right?) and observing how many people were using Dropbox in a roundabout way as a collaborative tool as opposed to its original intent of cloud storage.

Some of the features of Dropbox for Teams are available here but the collabortive capabilities, administrative tools, and file sharing to folks outside of your company seem to be features that would fit quite well into an SM's world.

The cost could be prohibitive though, beginning at ~$800/year for a team of five, and climbing higher per user from there.  This would certainly be something that would come in at the management level of the company and not one of the many free/cheap "ad hoc" SM tool that we so creatively staple on to our company's technology offerings to do our job more efficiently.

So, a couple of questions for the group at large:

  • Would this be a beneficial service to your SM team?  If so, how?
  • For folks in management roles out there - would this be cost prohibitive to your company?  Do you perceive the benefits to be worth the cost?

Just a quick thought on a benefit- instead of a script/score archive that can take up a lot of space in a theatre office (that may not have room) having access to Stage Management Paperwork and digital scores/scripts could reduce a need to keep physical archives. It also then makes it easy to share paperwork in a re-mount or with a new Stage Management team. No more e-mailing the previous SM's to get digital copies or looking for a CD of paperwork.

Just a thought.

Just bringing this back for the simple reason of touting my even stronger love for Dropbox.

Being a resident PSM who ended up buying Dropbox Pro (as did my Assoc AD) so that we could work together on files - I had been working with staff at DropBox for about 1.5 years, seeing if there was any way they would consider donating a Business account (which I think was what KMC was calling "teams" 2 years ago). After not hearing anything for 3.5 months, I suddenly got an invitation to be the Admin for my company's very own, non-expiring, $0/year, 50 licenses & 50 TB of storage business account!

I am very excited to embark on this new world of Dropbox and how the work environment can be improved at my ballet company. For one, to avoid dipping into my assistant's personal Dropbox accounts, they have always used the network to access my computer, get on my Dropbox that way, and get into my files. (Not my favorite thing, but it was the easiest way to go.) Now with the business account, I can create accounts for the company's computers/generic emails (not the people), and we can link what we need to, (no one needs to log into my computer and see all of my personal dropbox stuff - and yes, I know about selective sync). And yes, you can still invite people to folders, if they are outside of the company itself - for those that are freelance SMs.

I for one, am very excited - and who knows - recommend that someone at your company contact Dropbox. Perhaps they'll offer a free Business account for your art group. I've been at the ballet for a long time, so this is major for me, and I hope it sticks around (and remains useful) long after I'm gone.
