Clipboard that holds your iPad?
« on: Mar 29, 2012, 08:54 pm »
I've tried to to switch over to using the iPad instead of carrying a clipboard/notepad--- but I just can't do it.  If a director hands me a scribbled out plan of attach for the day I want a clipboard to attach it to.   I also just like to have a printed out copy of the day's schedule to scribble notes on-- and a notepad app like Penultimate is just not as easy to use as a pencil and a pad of paper.  That being said, I love my iPad am am spoiled by the convenience of having a PDF version of the script, score, all draftings and drawings, sound effect files, archive videos, cast recordings, dramaturgical research, web links, etc-- as well as electronic copies of all my paperwork to be at my fingertips.

So I find myself carrying around my clipboard and my iPad and kind of juggling them.   Searching for a solution to this problem  I found this web site: http://www.hardcaseforipad.com/  Here is a video of the one I'm thinking about buying.  http://youtu.be/DYrqwjcmkFE  I thought I'd ask for your thoughts on this item.  Useful?  To clunky?

It seems very useful to me.  It certainly looks to be about the most elegant solution if you're going to be switching between the two - and I agree with you, as much as a techophile as I am, nothing replaces a simple paper and pencil.  I don't have an iPad but I'd be a bit nervous setting it down or carrying it around in a backstage environment, especially if you're on a large, complex show with a lot of traffic and moving pieces.  As far as clunky - The only thing that kind of struck me in looking at the video was that the case opens from the top.  Would it be tough to hold it open and use your iPad while you're standing?  I don't know the answer to that, but something to think about.  And realistically I don't think it's going to be any worse than juggling a clipboard and a $400+ piece of equipment ;)

I agree with kmc307 about the clunky-factor.  If it opened from the side, like a book, or if it somehow folded over itself, it might be less difficult to use standing up.  I'm just imagining opening the clipboard to use the ipad and having a sheaf of papers fall out all over the deck.
You will have to sing for your supper & your mortgage, your dental coverage & your children's shoes, over & over again while people in desk jobs roll their eyes the minute you start to complain. So it's a good thing you like to sing.

If you scroll over on the website there are models for the iPad2 as well.  Not sure about the newest one, what are they calling that anyway?

The "new iPad." Presumably because they learned their lesson over the iPhone 4S vs 5 debacle.

I saw this post and had to join the forum because I felt so strongly about responding.

I experienced similar difficulty and was actually driven to invent my own clipboard-iPad solution. This summer myself and several others are working to bring it to market. Our product is slim profile and allows for quick and easy switching between clipboard and iPad. I had never thought that stage managers would be a potential market, but apparently so.. I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on our products.

The new iPad is so close in size and shape to the iPad 2 that it seems every case that is designed for the iPad 2 will work with the new iPad, and vice versa.

The biggest difference is that the ipad2 has a camera (front and rear), so a case for the original ipad isn't going to accommodate that.
I personally would like to bring a tortoise onto the stage, turn it into a racehorse, then into a hat, a song, a dragon and a fountain of water. One can dare anything in the theatre and it is the place where one dares the least. -Ionesco

Cases for the original iPad will definitely not work very well with the iPad 2 and the new iPad/iPad 3 as the body went through a very drastic redesign between the original and the 2.  But the 2 and the new/3 are the same shape body and only differ by something like a millimeter in thickness (due to the newest version having a larger battery to accommodate the retina display).
