Cheap Spike Tape?
« on: Sep 12, 2014, 07:14 pm »
Hey everybody!
I'm wondering if anyone knows of any stores or websites that sell cheap spike tape that wont pull up paint on a stage. The stage I normally work with, the paint alwaaaays comes up, even with scotch tape. This thin kind of fabricy spike tape I had once was the only stuff that worked, and I'm having a hard time finding it for under $6ish a roll.
Does anyone know a place that's cheaper?
Thanks!

I think you'll have a difficult time finding quality cloth tape under $6 a roll.  That really is not very expensive.  Budget constraints can be painful, but quality equipment and materials do cost money.

Try Southwestern Bag in LA. However, depending on where you are, shipping costs may be prohibitive. It may be a special deal that I get to my relationship with the company, but I get spike for $5 a roll as long as I order at least 2 rolls per color.

Check too if you are shipping, if shipping to a business address is cheaper. I knew that was the case with Syracuse Scenery and Stage Lighting in NY.

According to their new pricing list each roll is 5.07 or 5.37 for florescent. You can call or e-mail them. If you are local to Central NY you can just go right in. Otherwise you can call and ask about shipping costs. Their website is: http://syracusescenery.com/

They have always been really accommodating and good to me.

You may be better off trying to use a papertape that film crews use. It's closer to masking tape and won't pull paint off the floor.

The trade off is it will get wrecked extremely fast so you'd need to take down a master spike list or something and probably have to reapply it. May I ask why it's not an option to repaint following the removal of the spike tape?

It sounds like the problem may be the paint itself rather than the tape, if scotch tape can pull it up. It may be more efficient and cost-effective (and less of a pain for people taping or pulling tape up) to repaint the stage with a couple of coats of expensive, durable paint, and see if that makes a difference.

Of course, that depends on who sets the budget and how willing they are to spend money on upkeep...

Looks like this company Industry Tape has it cheap:

I've never used it but I've ordered the JVCC tape from Amazon a bunch of times. It's like $10 a roll but I tour a lot so getting things from Amazon is worth not trying to find theatrical supply stores.

There are some companies that are National...yet oddly local. Like...mine for instance. I won't advertise but if you find a distributor you like, they'll make it work for you even on tour. They can arrange to hit you at your next venue etc etc.
