Binder Spines - I need your feedback!
« on: Oct 03, 2006, 05:20 pm »
I'm currently working on an informal study on the frustrations that office workers/consumers feel when trying to shove paper labels into the spines of a binder in order to create a customized and easily identifiable binder for their bookshelf.... >:(

If you’ve ever tried to make your own paper labels for the spine of a binder, you know how challenging it can be to avoid rips and wrinkles.  And, you can forget about ever removing the label to replace it with another!

What are your thoughts on this topic?  What solutions do you have?

 ???

The answer is simple young grasshopper.

1)  Laminate it - it goes it really easy.

2) Use a metal ruler to guide it in.

(BUT - I am Laminate them all now.)

Hmmm, what have I done in the past...
I have used strong paper which is less likely to wrinkle (it can be a little harder to get in since it is thicker but...).  Make the insert slightly more narrow than the opening...
To be able to pull it out to replace, before inserting, add a small tab made of tape to the top end of the paper that will slightly stick out.
I just use a label maker and affix that to the spine so...

Ditto.  I use a labelmaker these days....though I manage to stick 2 lines from the label maker INTO one of those slide pockets last week ;)

I just print sticky labels and slap 'em on the outside of the binder; I even color-coordinate various topics.  New topic, slap on a new label on top of the old one.  Since I always buy plastic-covered binders for durability, when the stack of labels gets to looking too tacky I just soak the binder in hot water for a bit to get the labels off.

I use a ruler usually

Insert the paper as far as you can without forcing, then take a narrow metal ruler and insert between the clear plastic and the lable. Push on the ruler so that as you move it down, the paper also moves down - after a bit of practice, it takes only moments to get a perfect lable done.

Another tip is to make sure you have the folder open "spread eagle" - generally the plasic is stretched slightly when the binder is closed.

The second method I use is to print the lable on plain paper (slightly smaller than the spine), use a decent glue to stick it down, then contact over the top

Because of this very frustration I stopped using those kinds of binders.  Now I purchase binders without a clear plastic outside and instead make my own labels and stick them on.

I use a label maker and stick it on the outside.  It's quick and easy and also easy to change if I want to.

A cheap way to conform to the office standard, if laminating isn't an option...Run a couple of strips of tape along the back side of the label to strengthen it, trim it to fit easily and it should just slip right in.

I use a pair of tweezers to remove the paper strip.  The pocket usually has enough give that it doesn't get stretched out if the strip is long enough so the end i near the opening.

I get metallic markers and write on the binder itself.

However, I don't store my old prompt books in three-ring binders.  I transfer them to pressboard "transfer" binders.  They save a lot of room on the bookshelf, as they lay flat.  I write the name of the play on the spine--which is now the side of the papers pushed together.

I'm flattered, but the answer is still no.
