I just went to do some research on the theater that gave me my first professional gig - Seaside Music Theater in Daytona Beach Florida - only to discover it closed before the summer of 2008.  Such a shame too as they had only recently opened a new performance space on the beach itself.

Also, Paragon Theater in Denver has announced that it is closing...  Very sad news, especially since it was started by some old college friends...

Denver's Paragon Theatre to close permanently, just weeks after moving into new space

By Claire Martin
The Denver Post

Less than a month after inaugurating its new digs in Denver's RiNo district, the Paragon Theatre ensemble has announced that it will close permanently after the final performance of its current show, "Miss Julie."

"It's a sad, terrible loss," said John Moore, the former drama critic for the Denver Post.

"I spoke at their tenth anniversary last year, and the big question when you celebrate 10 years for a theater company is: How did they survive when so many others come and go? There must be 100 theater companies in Colorado, but the names of those companies change one year to the next. Only a small percentage make it 10 years."

Since its incorporation in 2000, the Paragon Theatre's productions consistently have fared well against more well-heeled theatrical companies, annually winning Ovation and Henry awards, along with warm reviews. Paragon depended entirely on volunteers, with only one paid employee, who was charged with development.

"It was a hard decision to make, but we were fighting too hard with the city and building committees to get everything up to code in the new space," said Paragon's Warren Sherrill.

"Just when we thought we were going to get there, we got thrown a curve ball. Right before 'Miss Julie' opened, we learned we had to add another bathroom. That was too much after already putting in expenses we hadn't foreseen, like adding a handicapped ramp to the back of the building."

As soon as its board of directors voted to close late last week, Sherrill and other Paragon ensemble members began personally calling longtime patrons and donors.

"That's who we feel we're letting down the most," Sherrill said. He devoted most of the past weekend to those phone calls.

"We feel we've done what we set out to do. We have no regrets. If we get the energy and drive to try something crazy like this again, we might. But for now, it's a good break. It's a Seinfeld-type feeling. Or REM; someone mentioned them the other night. We're ending on top."

Moore called the decision to close "not just their loss, but everyone's loss.

"Everyone thought the hard part was behind them. Paragon had a lot of good years left. They were just hitting their stride."

Thought it was worth mentioning that North Shore Music Theatre re-opened in 2010.  It was purchased from the bank by Bill Hanney and is now running as a for-profit theatre.  It's not quite the same that it was but at least it's open again.

Not sure if this was a dig at for-profit ventures or I'm misreading it, but I thought it worth saying: if people can earn a profit producing theatre, that's a good thing folks.  Profit means more folks are likely to invest, which as VSM mentioned means more theatre and more jobs.

Thanks for sharing some good news Maggie K!

I don't think it was meant as a dig . . . but this particular for business venture seems to be a bit odd - but again . . . jobs is jobs.

On the good news side, the Bucks County Playhouse, which has been dark for about about a year and a half (and luckily did not "mysteriously" burn down, as several other theaters that had been under the control of the previous owner did), announced their new season for their reopening in July.  They are under new management, and, if I recall correctly, are hoping to once again begin operating under an Equity contract again sometime in the near future.

The facility is also undergoing a very much needed renovation.

To clarify, my previous post wasn't intended to be a dig at for-profit theatres.  I was merely pointing out one of the main differences between the old NSMT (not-for-profit and run by a board of directors) and the new (for-profit and run by a single owner).  An open theatre that is hiring is always a good thing and the re-opening of this one has been heartening for the community.  I can only hope that this can become a trend.

A closing of an interesting nature I read about this morning in the Miami Herald.  The Mosaic Theatre is closing, however it would seem the closure is not for financial reasons, but rather that the founder has decided to leave.  The Board of Directors is opting to close rather than find a replacement.  The founder's decision to leave for "quality of life" is interesting - I wonder how many pros have gone on to other disciplines for similar reasons.

Quote
“More than anything, I wanted this theater to continue after I’m gone,” said Simon, who launched the company in 2001 with a production of Nicholas Kazan’s Blood Moon. “But over the past year, without anyone knowing why, I’ve talked to artistic directors about working 42 out of 52 weekends every year. It really came down to quality of life. Ninety-five percent said that after they had children, they wish they’d done things differently.”

Wow, starting from scratch without on-site shops, a performing arts center venue, or new venue? Is losing their Equity status a possibility? I'll admit I don't know how that works...could they stay Actor's Theatre sans an Equity contract?

Yup, in Canada, we lost the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company almost a year ago.  It was one of the oldest regional theatre companies in Canada and one of the largest in Western Canada, and it closed suddenly (essentially overnight).

There was an "announcement event" in the theatre, which people thought was their season announcement.  It was not a season announcement :(

I can't say that we were completely surprised that it happened, I mean, it had been looming for years, but everyone had kind of hoped that they would get their crap together and save themselves.  That didn't happen.
