Tech under SPECIAL APPEARANCE AGREEMENT?
« on: May 31, 2012, 05:17 pm »
Can anyone explain how tech works under a Special Appearance Agreement?  It seems pretty clearly stated, "Maximum of 30 hours of work (rehearsal and performance) per week." (under Level II).  And that work days cannot be over 5 hours without overtime.  So does that mean no chance of longer days or a 10 out of 12 for tech without major ovetime pay?

"There shall be no less than one scheduled full day off each week, free of
rehearsals, performances, costume and/or photo calls.  A full day off shall be
twenty-four (24) hours in addition to the rest period required in (G)(3) above."

And is there any option to do a seven day work week (just on Opening week)...with or without overtime pay?

Just trying to get a better understanding of all this since I can't imagine how you tech if your lead is equity and the company can't afford the overtime hours.

thanks for the help

As always, check with your rep . .

Yes, the agreement seems to clearly states your rehearsal day is five hours.

So to do a ten out of twelve, the actor would be paid 15.00 an hour - or 75.00 - which doesn't seem to be a tremendous amount.

As far as not having a day off in the week - - - some agreements allow this on opening week, but this one does not seem.  You would have to check with AEA on what the rate would be . . . but is could either be straight overtime, some multiple of the overtime rate, or just  flat fee.

I'll say it, since no one else has... One would think your employers would have taken this into consideration, when hiring the AEA actor. I can't imagine why they would hire an AEA actor, on this contract, if they "can't afford the overtime hours," or can't tech. within the specified number of rehearsal hours. Shouldn't this have been taken into consideration, a lot earlier in the process?  Of course there's always the option of teching without him/her when the 5 AEA hours are up. I sure understand the contract, but not the employers who possibly didn't read or understand it...

Just trying to get a better understanding of all this since I can't imagine how you tech if your lead is equity and the company can't afford the overtime hours.

I've seen a concession granted that allowed for no days off during tech week in exchange for an extra day off the previous week (usually the weekend before tech) and/or two days off immediately following opening weekend - always worth asking.

That being said, I've been told the Special Appearance is restrictive in nature becuse of the low salaries, no required health, and the lack of a required Equity SM.  You get what you pay for!

(actually, several contracts allow a daylight day of rest in the week before first paid public performance)

You have to think about things this way . . .

Anything is possible for a price.

The reason this conflict is SO restrictive is the cost is so cheap.
