Just got my card with a SPT contract
« on: Feb 27, 2009, 07:52 pm »
I just got my card by signing a contract for a new SPT production in NJ

Any tips with the contract or being new to AEA?

I have worked under AEA contracts throughout my career but always as an intern/apprentice or it was under the showcase code in NYC

Thanks,

John

SPT is fairly straightforward - the biggest thing to know is that although you're allowed 10 out of 12s for tech - there is no increase in hours for the week for actors or SMs.  So keep track of yours and the actors hours for the week and if you use 1 or 2 10 out of 12s - make sure it falls under the proper hours based on what level SPT you are.  Otherwise you'll go into OT for that week.

If you have any more questions - let me know - I've been working under SPT for a little while now.

That is very sweet and it sure is crazy how things work out!  I am going to try to make it to the drink night on Monday! ;)

I spent quite a bit of time on SPT too, so feel free to ask questions! I sure asked enough when I started out on that contract and everyone here was very helpful!

Here is an SPT question for you...

If only half of our contacts on the show have to be equity and its a small musical (8 actors) can the dance captain be non-equity?

Note: Only half have to be equity due to special agreement with AEA.

Well, I have always said that an Equity card does not a Dance Captain make.
But - if there is a qualified Equity member, then I think they should be given the task.

Again ~ As always, check with your local AEA Rep just to be sure.

I agree with VSM, on all points.

At my SPT our dance captain was the Asst. Choreo and not Equity. This was never a problem that I could see.

Thanks for the tips, was just trying to get all the info before we have a convo regarding this matter.

The show is Kingdom, a new musical (Very In The Heights -esque) at ReVision Theatre in Asbury Park, NJ

My roommate (a director) interviewed for that show! She did not get the job, but what a small world nonetheless.

Also - my biggest piece of advice for you is to not be afraid to ask questions. Clearly this is a forum where that is welcome, and we're all always happy to help, but I mean outside of here. For example - don't be afraid to ask the production manager about how they handled tech in the past and please, please never be afraid to call/email Equity and speak to a rep. In fact, if they're not coming to your first rehearsal, find out who your rep is! They are our union and are there to help. Calling does not get anyone in trouble (unless they should be getting in trouble) and I have always hated that misconception that calling the union is telling on someone for doing something wrong!
