ASMs as understudies

The LORT rulebook says that in LORT-A theatres, the First Assistant may not act.  Does that also mean that the ASM (if there is only one) may not understudy?

As always, call the office.

But, I would make the assumption that if there is only one ASM, they may not act or understudy.
Kinda defeats the purpose if they do...

I would agree.  It seems like understudying would not be allowed either.
Superman can leap tall buildings in a single bound.  Stage managers have to lift up the buildings so everyone else can walk under them.
