What's next?
« on: Mar 17, 2012, 09:51 pm »
OK, weird question, I know, but I'll put it out there: what would you do if you knew you could never stage manage again? (If anyone starts quoting What I Did for Love, I will find you...    :P)

I think that's an excellent question to pose, as well as a realistic one. Statistics say that most stage managers rarely stay stage managers the length of their careers - especially women or those with families - though many transition into artistic administrative or other arts-related positions. You have to keep in the back of your mind the fact that your career as a stage manager means you will gain experience that translates well into several fields, should you desire to leave the arts altogether, and it's always a good idea to keep an eye out for those fields that interest you.

I know realistically that I won't be doing this forever, because at some point I expect the whole process of managing a production will lose its appeal and I'll wish to move on. If you mean 'what would I do,' as in what would be my next career step, I imagine I would be one of those that would transition into arts administration, most likely company management or administration within an arts department of a university/conservatory. I interviewed for positions in both within the past year, company management in Arizona (to be closer to family) and within a university (arts admin at Yale - on two separate occasions), because it would have been beneficial to my family (I currently bring in the only income). Genuine relief came over me when I didn't land any of the positions - which tells me I'm not quite ready to let stage management go.

(And I won't quote What I Did For Love, though I might start humming Finishing The Hat...)

I'm not sure exactly what I would do, but I do joke that it would not involve a stopwatch.  If I have to be responsible for 10 minute breaks and starting and stopping something, I might as well be doing theater.

I have always thought about doing something for myself, running a B&B or opening a knitting store (apparently being poor doesn't bother me).  I've thought about going back to school for graphic design or marine biology.  Something totally different.  Maybe something that involves daylight.  I'm not sure I could step into a different position in the theatrical arts, though that would be the road of least resistance.  I'm sure I would find myself micro-managing some poor stage manager.  :)

Something where I could go to the bathroom when I wanted.

Teaching.
Production Management.
Company Management / General Management (more interested in this in the commerical world)
House Wife

Rescue dogs - this is part of my retirement plan.

But, I actually see myself doing this for awhile longer.

One day I see myself going on to become a company manager/general manager but sometimes I daydream of:

- Stay at home mom
- Cake decorator
- Culinary school
- Knitting store

But, like Matthew, I see myself in this business of show for quite awhile longer :)

That's a little scary... you just nailed three of my major life activities since losing stage mgmt... I'm here to tell you, though, they're not bad as choices.
And, you never know how "plans" can get taken out of our control, too...

(What's out of my control? Never happens ...) :-@

I've thought about this from time to time.

At this point in my life, should something happen to make me leave stage management I could see myself going to culinary school.  I have no desire to work in the restaurant industry itself, but would instead be interested in becoming a personal chef.

Either that or find that nice doctor or lawyer who wants to let me be a house-husband and support me in the lifestyle I hope to become accustomed to  ;)

I think about this all the time. I think about:
- being a theatre manager/artistic/executive director
- teaching
- starting a small business (bar or restaurant)
- being a stay at home dad
- carpentry
Who knows!

Probably pursue my other love, baking. Which is currently what I do to unwind from stage managing, so odds are good that I'd soon turn to stage managing to unwind from making cakes all day.  :D
I personally would like to bring a tortoise onto the stage, turn it into a racehorse, then into a hat, a song, a dragon and a fountain of water. One can dare anything in the theatre and it is the place where one dares the least. -Ionesco

I think I would either want to transition into production management or arts administration. Of course, I could always just find a job doing data entry and decide my nights would be devoted to writing instead of running rehearsals.

Sigh...  If I could answer this question, I would be a lot less miserable right now.  I'm trying to transition back into stage management because I have found that neither retail nor banking are industries I desire to have any part of.

I'm pretty much post-stage-management now, and training to be a therapist.  No...really...I just can't stay away from "crazy" people :-).  More seriously, I got into theater partly because I feel it does something positive for the world, so I want my next thing to be in line with that.

There are some related thoughts in this thread:

I'm sorta in my "next" career. I'm called a stage manager, but my duties are not the same as a theatrical stage manager: I haven't called a show in over a year.

This was not planned. I don't expect to stay here forever, but the idea of staying in one area, having vacation time, weekends off, steady paycheck, fantastic health benefits are all surpassing my need to create art.
