Weirdest Item In Your Kit
« on: Oct 03, 2011, 03:37 pm »
An actor asked me the other day what the weirdest thing I'd ever heard of a stage manager keeping in their kit was. I gave him the standard "unlubricated condoms" answer, and promised to ask around.

So - what is the weirdest thing you keep in your kit? The weirdest thing you've seen in someone else's kit? The weirdest thing anyone has asked you for?

When I was doing The Changing Room- a 3pack of jockstraps.
I personally would like to bring a tortoise onto the stage, turn it into a racehorse, then into a hat, a song, a dragon and a fountain of water. One can dare anything in the theatre and it is the place where one dares the least. -Ionesco

Gardening Tools...

I have a terrible habit of leaving things in my car after shows. We had used them as a prop and in the next show at the last minute we needed Gardening tools, and then in the next show. It seems we keep needing them... so they are in there... just in case...

C**K Ring.

It was gift.

It's in my kit for some reason.

Maybe it's not strange to others, but to me, it is.

A desk bell (the familiar bell-hop kind).

I found one in a Pier 1 and felt it may come in useful some day. The very next show I got, a "beep" was needed over 20 times, so I offered the bell.

Now it has a home in my kit.

Four small lead weights.  Makes the bag a little heavy, but they are perfect for holding down the corners of groundplans, etc that have been in a roll...

Awesome!

Condoms...  but not the unlubricated kind for mics.  The lubricated kind for actors...

I have one of these too- the first professional SM I assisted gave it to me as an opening night gift. :)

Not actually in my kit, unless you count my entire flat including loft/attic as one giant kit, but I tend to hang on to/acquire things that might be props that would be otherwise difficult to source, so for example, displayed on the wall of my flat is a 3' brass posthorn (already been in two shows), and in the loft I have a wooden washboard.

A fingerpuppet.

It was a gift from a show, and is now a current prop. The cast was stunned when the director said we would need to find one and I just pulled it out of the "giant tackle box of magic." (Cast member named it that - it stuck.)

I don't know if it's that weird, but I bring toupee tape with me anytime I have a show or performance because I can always find a use for it wether it is a quick hem or keeping clothes from exposing to much. I know they make fabric tape for this but the toupee tape is a whole lot stickier than the other stuff and it comes in a small box with like 200 strips.
What is time even?

An oral syringe (pet size).

I have it from a time that I needed to give my cat medicine.  I kept it afterwards for my kit and it has been used in several plays when actors need to shoot up.

It's fatter than a normal medical syringe so it reads well onstage and is not so fat that it looks fake.  It also has no needle, so it is totally safe.

Not in my kit but in my office- a jar of black paint labeled "Magic Disappearing Paint"

I keep an old-fashioned tally clicker in my kit. A thousand and one (perhaps up to 9999?) uses, yet nobody seems to carry them any more.

Now I'm curious. What do you use it for?
