show us your booth!
« on: Mar 12, 2010, 04:23 pm »
Let's see where you work (right now), how it's set up, how you've personalized it, etc.

My tiny booth! The joke is that they keep hiring me because I'm the only one who can fit here comfortably.  :)

Lightboard to my left, sound to my right...also on the left is my USR video monitor, because the booth is off to the side of the audience.

And taped right above where I sit is a silver Buddha charm and a fortune cookie fortune that says "Don't stop now!"

So what does your workspace look like?
I personally would like to bring a tortoise onto the stage, turn it into a racehorse, then into a hat, a song, a dragon and a fountain of water. One can dare anything in the theatre and it is the place where one dares the least. -Ionesco

Aw! Wish I had snapped a picture of the set-up I had on the last show I did.  I called from the deck so I had a platform that set me 3 ft off the deck with a stool (although I mostly stood) and a giant map table with room for my book, q sheets, and a monitor with video feed to the conductor.  There was a lower shelf that housed the intercom console. Set me above the top of the scenery so I could see the deck and I was right beside the fly rail, so it made communication during tech rehearsals easy.  It was pretty sharp if I do say so myself.

Here's the booth at my high school.  I usually call from a music stand behind the sound and light ops.  This is my fourth year calling shows in it, and will be in it for two more, until I graduate.  It feels a little bit like home...

So, after six years, I am leaving my current theater.

And the pranks have begun.

When I moved into my new housing, a large oil derrick from a show was in the bedroom.

Later that week, a severed head was in the fridge, porn was strewn about the apartment (A prop) and my bed was covered in fake rose petals and mylar (Also props).

Yesterday, the Starbucks across from the street was plastered with my photo with "DO NOT SERVE" put above it.

Today, my calling station in the booth was plastered with post its.

So, yes Stage Managers can take a joke . . . I seem to have to over and over.

He, he.  the oil derrick is new news.  I didn't hear about that one! Best of luck, Matthew, and be REALLY careful today!

Ruth, I can turn over my left shoulder and see the stage . . . but basically, it's mostly off the monitor.  (I do look on stage for some tight door cues, and if the smoke blurs the onstage image on the monitor.)  It's a whole new experience for me - plus I stand for most of the show.

I stood for three years while touring with Pilobolus Dance Theatre! And another regional theatre I've worked at, has no room in the wings to sit at the console--one must stand.

I've always wanted a treadmill to walk on while I called, actually...  I'll take photos of my booth next week when I move into it.

Oh Matt, the call script in the Jello brought me physical pain! But the balloon filled office was nice.

Yes Matthew. I saw the prompt book and I cringed. I hope that was not the actual one. No one messes with that!

That would be genius! I wouldn't have to find time to go to the gym!

I'm another who must stand or sit on the counter. When they built our booth, they built it awkwardly. No chair is tall enough to see out the window.
