Shall there be an SMNetwork LinkedIn Group?
« on: Oct 26, 2012, 05:27 am »
So there's been a request for a LinkedIn group for SMNetwork members, kind of like the Facebook group.

I'd rather not. But. I'll go with the will of the group.

This is a 15 day poll. The Facebook Group has 83 members. I need to see over half of that - 42 votes - in favor of a LinkedIn group by the end of the poll. None of you will be able to see the numbers until after the poll expires. Each member gets one vote.

If I see at least 42 "yes" votes by the end, and someone is willing to handle the join requests, I'll make the group.

Same rules for it would apply as are in effect for the Facebook group - it's for finding each others' accounts, since it's tough to figure out who everyone is based on their SMNet nicknames.

Thanks, PSMKay! I'd be willing to handle the join requests if this goes through.

No "no" response? Worried about fragmentation.

Perhaps a question that needs to be asked of our pros who are still in the business:

  • Those that hire: how often is LinkedIn a tool that will sway you towards hiring, or not hiring, a candidate?
  • To our profesionals: how much career gain can you quantify from LinkedIn?  Have you been hired based on your profile or connections you've made through the network?  Have employers requested your LinkedIn profile as a tool to supplement your resume?

Potential employers have sought out and viewed my linkedin profile and it is an entrance point to my website pretty frequently. Can't speak to how often, exactly, it gets me hired, but it does get my name out there.

I am amazed when I send a resume off to a new theater, how often someone from that theater views my profile on LinkedIn. I still do think it's as widespread in our industry as others.

Although a head hunter found my resume on LinkedIn . . .

Many people I know have profiles and people from potential employers look at them, but as for looking for/getting company information, I end up at their FB page.

What would be the point of making a LI group for us.  What would we gain?  I am having trouble seeing the advantage.  I see the advantage of individual members having LI profiles, but why do we need a group?

The FB group was created so that members could find each other, given that many members don't use their real names here. It has also grown to serve as an announcement venue when SMNet is experiencing outages. My guess is that a LinkedIn group would serve a similar "let's find each other" purpose, but the outages would still be posted just to FB.

This was the root question behind my earlier post - perhaps better stated by Jessie.

And, just looking over the SMA LinkedIn group; I don't think we would gain ANYTHING by having a group there.

So yes, the general consensus seems to be "meh." Let's hold off for now. Perhaps we can revisit at a later date.
