New Years Resolutions
« on: Jan 06, 2013, 12:31 pm »
What's your new years resolution (if you're into that sort of thing)?

Mine: eat breakfast every morning. Most important meal of the day, starts your metabolism, etc etc....but I rarely eat it.
I personally would like to bring a tortoise onto the stage, turn it into a racehorse, then into a hat, a song, a dragon and a fountain of water. One can dare anything in the theatre and it is the place where one dares the least. -Ionesco

I did mine back in July--

1. Drink more.
2. Be less diplomatic.

I'm not kidding.

Mine is to keep in better contact with old friends.  It's the nature of our job to move from place to place, get really close with people and then not see them again for years.  On one hand, it's great to meet so many different people, but it takes its toll on the ability to maintain close relationships.

Dallas, let's hang out sometime. :)

Mine is not a resolution per se, however could potentially be of interest to any of those with "get in shape" type resolutions.

My better two thirds gave me a Fit Bit One for Christmas.  It tracks steps traveled, distance, stairs climbed, and even the quality of your sleep.  It syncs wirelessly to some mobile phones and tablets, and all computers.  The really cool part is that you can "friend" people through the online dashboard and see their steps and activity.  It becomes insanely competitive with your group of folks who have it.
Get action. Do things; be sane; don’t fritter away your time; create, act, take a place wherever you are and be somebody; get action. -T. Roosevelt

I have two goals for the year:

1) Continue to get healthier. I lost 24 pounds in 2012, mostly by eating smaller portions and exercising regularly. Now I need to start eating better foods (more fruit and veggies), in addition to start doing strength/core work. I did my first strength class on Saturday morning, and I *am* feeling it today.

2) Stay on top of my email inboxes. I get so much email, I need to be more consistent with dealing with the messages, as well as getting of of many of the lists I'm on.

1) Now that I have a regular, guaranteed income for the first time in my life (and a union to protect my contract), I'm still living paycheque-to-paycheque as if I were temping and doing shows on the side. And that's crazy, and I can do better. And I will. (Savings, investments, long-term purchases [hey, I have a permanent apartment now where I can buy and keep stuff for prolonged periods, rather than needing to empty it all into my parents' garage whenever I get a touring gig! I should take advantage of this!], all that good stuff.)

2) Cook more. Cook more real food, at that. (Sandwich is delicious, but sandwich is only arguably real food.)

As with most of the country, I need to lose weight and get fit!

I need to lose a good 60-80 pounds. I had lost nearly 30 in the spring of 2012, but gained that and then some in the summer.
So to do that; I am doing yoga 3-5 times a week, running 3 days a week, and doing strength training/exercise classes 3 times a week.
And, of course, improving my eating habits: pre-packing my lunches EVERY day, planning dinners ahead, etc.

But, as strongly as I feel about that. That's not what is important, really.

In 2013 I want to;
love a little bolder
laugh a little louder
stand a little taller
be a littler braver
dream a little bigger
make the world a little brighter.
To be a good stage manager you need to have the soul of an artist, the mind of a director, the eye of a designer, the joy of being an actor...
and the ability to manage them all.

I should add that I am teased relentlessly for being a theatre person who doesn't drink. I'm suspicious that there's a pool at work on who can get me past one-and-done.
