GREENROOM: Patron Saint of Stage Managers?
« on: Apr 26, 2010, 11:47 pm »
This came in conversation over headset.

Is there a traditional Patron Saint who would be over us?

Let me know.

St. Genesius is the patron saint of theatrical performers (also lawyers and epileptics - I'm sure there's a joke in there somewhere).

But that basically is just lumping us in with the actors.  For something a little more specific to what we do:
St. Bernadette, patron of shepherds (since we shepherd/protect/guide the production and cast), or...
St. Brigid, patron of midwives (it may not be our baby, but we definitely help deliver it), or...
St. Juilan, patron of jugglers (sure, I can take blocking, be on book, run sound, set props, take tech notes and do tomorrow's schedule all at the same time...  Coffee's out? Got it.), or...
St. Blaise, patron of town criers ("Hear ye, Hear ye, the play is about to begin - get thee to places!"), or, hopefully not too often...
St. Cajetan, the patron of the unemployed.

May we add to the list:
St Wenceslaus patron Saint of Bohemia
St Rita patron Saint of impossible causes
St Catherine patron Saint of art
Maybe we should choose our own saint to represent us? I am sure that would be quite a discussion. I did find an online list that included saints for television workers, carnival workers and circus workers so why not theatre workers?

Saint Venerius of Milan - the patron saint of Lighthouse Keepers... We help guide the ship in the dark, keep it away from the rocks, and it can be a lonely existance

Saint Ursicinus of Saint-Ursanne - the patron saint against neck stiffness and pain... Self evident I believe.

Saint Dymphna- saint of family happiness and mental health.
I personally would like to bring a tortoise onto the stage, turn it into a racehorse, then into a hat, a song, a dragon and a fountain of water. One can dare anything in the theatre and it is the place where one dares the least. -Ionesco

St Peter, patron saint of bridge builders
St Gabriel, patron saint of diplomats
Saints Anthony, Lawrence and Martin de Porres, patron saints of the poor (not so funny that it takes three of them to handle this category)
