Meals!
« on: Mar 13, 2012, 03:26 pm »
In my ongoing quest to find healthy, filling meals that are easy to prepare ahead of time and take to rehearsals, I wanted to share a couple articles:

Tips for lunches that don't need to be refrigerated:
http://www.columbusparent.com/content/stories/2011/02/23/ntk-the-go-to-guide-school-lunches.html

10 healthy snacks:

10 cook-ahead meal bases:

I personally would like to bring a tortoise onto the stage, turn it into a racehorse, then into a hat, a song, a dragon and a fountain of water. One can dare anything in the theatre and it is the place where one dares the least. -Ionesco

I can't help but notice my normal staples of stage managing life (pizza, wings, beer, cigarettes and beef jerky) are no where to be found on these lists....;)

I recently got a crock pot and have been doing one big meal a week in it and then freeze the leftovers for work to curb my spending on snacks and dinner - although I do have the luxuries of a fridge and microwave at work so this makes it easier!

It also makes my coworkers uber-jealous. Your dollar slice of pizza doesn't compare to my beef stew! ;)

Getting a crock pot changed my life. Not only can you make good food in bulk, it can cook while you're at rehearsal.

I am terrible about cooking ahead, but I do make lunches the night before using fun lunch pails. A friend of mine, a lovely and talented musical theater performer, has a side business selling these wonderful containers - basically clever plastic bento boxes - that allow me to give myself a lot of variety cuz I find I want many different flavors by the time I get a meal break. And I can prepack a whole bunch of stuff that would otherwise require separate tubs.

She is always doing giveaways and sales, and altho I get nothing financial out of it, if you mention my name she will let me know (she is wonderful abt thank you notes).

(again, I get no commissions or goodies, so I hope this doesn't overstep my bounds)

@loebtmc - I think that's the kind of referral we like to see.

My husband came across this article on LifeHacker:

http://lifehacker.com/mason-jar/

Granted, it does require refrigeration, but it works! If you can discipline yourself to go to the grocery, grab a bunch of fresh veggies and fruit - then get home, clean, and disperse them between your mason jars and seal them up, they will be good for over a week. I've done this with salads, cut up carrots, bell peppers, etc and even made my own little fruit salads. The hard part is keeping up with it. And, of course, your fridge will be rather full of jars - but it's great to know you can grab a few jars and you're set on food for the day. And, of course, you can do this with your crock pot cooking items (just be careful of the hot glass). We tend to do canning with soups.

Granted, the purchase price of a vacuum sealer and the jars are an investment up front. We already had the vacuum sealer from years ago, we just needed to buy the mason jars. However, I will say, when we are on it, it really does save money from veggies going bad and keeps you from running out for fast food on dinner break.

I don't think I loved an appliance as much as I love my crock pot.

Here's another website. She has a wide variety of recipes.

Yeah...I know where you're coming from there. Well, except the cigarettes.... My voice teacher would tear my hide and send me to a taxidermist.
