ARTICLE: Backstage at 'Metamorphoses'

In the Washington Post this morning, there's a really interesting article on Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses, focused on its current run at Arena Stage and how they dealt with the challenges of working with so much water onstage. Lots of quotes from the stage manager, but I think it's generally interesting to see how the water really affected all aspects of the production. Link

Very interesting - my first two thoughts were 1) temperature and 2) weight of the pool. I'm glad that after so many productions things have evolved into a more streamlined process.

What I do wonder is if the water is chlorinated for sanitary reasons, with everyone in the water, someone is sick or something is in the water = everyone sick.

Sounds like a headache of circumstances that I hope I never have to deal with ;)

Most water shows use chlorine alternatives to avoid damaging costumes and avoid the smell.

I just saw this show yesterday at the NAC (in Ottawa). They did a series of videos on the creation process - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvqlJLaQahQ.

It took me a while to relax and watch the show - the set just looked so pointy and slippery. But it was interesting to go up close after and see the materials they'd chosen to build with.
