Student SM Challenge #6: Design your Department
« on: Apr 10, 2009, 01:15 am »
This student challenge is mainly directed at our college student members, but it is open to all for discussion.

A private college has a small drama department, as spin-off from their English department.  The bulk of the classes are in theatrical literature and history, with a couple of acting classes, a "tech theatre" class and a public speaking class.  They have a theater facility, but it is used primarily for seminars and famous speakers.  Students have done grass-roots performances for years in found spaces, but due to scheduling conflicts with the main hall there have been only two school-sponsored productions a year, and they are typically small.

However, a new grant donated by an anonymous alumnus has allowed them to create an undergraduate stage management major and convert an old gymnasium into a black box theatre.

You are the head of this little drama department.  Your task is to design the curriculum and hire the right teachers to create an effective major.  You can create new courses, and the new theatre can serve as your lab.  What classes do you require your student stage managers to take?  (They can be theatre courses or not.)  What expertise will you look for in your new teaching staff?  How many people will you accept into your program?  What sort of extra-curricular experience will you offer/require?

This is a very detailed scenario that would take huge amounts of paperwork and proposals. But here is where I would start...

SM Courses (required for major):
Stage Management I, Stage Management II, Interpersonal Communication Skills, Company Management, PSY: Personalities, Senior Production Seminar

PSY: Personalities is a class we offer here at my school that I feel would be extremely beneficial to SM students because they learn what the major personality types are and how each one is best communicated with. Senior Production Seminar is another class we offer to tech students where you learn how to find and get jobs, portfolios, mock interviews and the like.

SM Courses (recommended):
All design courses available, drafting, any psychology courses, speech, acting I, any art history (if there is an interest in designing especially)

Staff:
Naturally I would want experienced stage managers who are also skilled in other fields such as lighting and/or sound. Also an SM or other professional who has experience in company management. I would fill in any holes for design and hire a TD as well. Other traits I would look for is good communication and collaborative skills, excellent teaching skills that focus on hands-on experience, and positive personalities that can help encourage a new program to grow.

At first we would be pressed to fill a full season effectively with a huge number of SM students. I would look at how many actors we would have and try to use that to judge how many production we could handle. My goal would be to increase the number of sponsored production to four, and encourage off-the-wall productions that are student handled.

This would definitely be a self-starter program that will need to find good students who show initiative to start their own programs and production to learn what they need in addition to what the program itself can offer. My hope would be to mainly recruit SM students who are also interested in learning design, directing and possibly acting. This way each SM can hopefully SM once, ASM once, and work on two other design assignments (in addition to outside projects). In this case I would hope to recruit 4 SM for the first few years until the program grows.

If there are local theaters (community or professional) I would hope to build a relationship with them to possibly have our SMs do unpaid internships during their time (either summers or in between projects) so they can learn how to do crews and possibly shadow an SM (or even have the opportunity to SM in smaller theaters) in a professional atmosphere.

As for extra curricular I would require participation in some form for every sponsored production and encourage participation in all student off-the-walls by offering either credit or some incentive through the department. Every week would be a required production meeting (also potentially for credit) where all of our students come together to discuss what would help them, what they are experiencing and work out any issues and make sure we are all on the same page for the upcoming productions.

These are all mostly ideas from my own college as well as grad programs I have researched. Also some are new takes on old ideas. What do you think Kay, would this be a plausible start to a program?

As always with these things, there is no wrong or right answer.  I think you're on the right track and your program would definitely be a good start.  I like your ideas of weekly production meetings and psychology courses.  Of course, other people might not.

The challenge remains open to others!

I think Tomorrow has a good grasp on what a department should look like.  I would add theatre management(owning and running a theatre) and a business course.  I found those very helpful throughout my 4 years.

A very good start! But I would also have to add at least one course from the "tech theatre", an acting course, a public speaking course and literature and history of theatre because, as an SM, you should know about all these things when walking into a theatre and should have experienced them. Therefore, they would all be first year courses to get the students aquainted (sp?) with them, and then if they want to continue with some for electives they could. I really like the psychology idea as well! I believe it would also be interesting to have a "True Colours" seminar with the students. I've taken it through school and it's very helpful to see where other students are coming from and why they do certain things, as well as yourself. Gold, Blue, Orange and Green are the colours and you can be more than one...it'll help the students zero in on who should be handling what if they are in a team (SM and 3 ASM's for one of the sponsored productions maybe?). Just thought I'd throw that one out there :)

Love the subject on this by the way :)

I love the ideas thrown out so far. The psychology is idea is intriguing, certainly not one I would have thought of myself but I see the logic behind it.

I would add first aid and CPR certification (I realize that would not be a semester long course, more like a weekend thing but it should definitely be required).

I would also add a practical course in each shop (costumes, electrics, set, etc.). I do think that the students should take an intro level design course in each area but i also think they should have the practical, hands on aspect of the individual areas.

i'm sure there is much more but that's all that springs immediately to mind

In terms of classes for the major, I think that there should be Stage Management (probably two levels), Production Management, Arts Management/Administration, perhaps a Business or Finances course covering basic stuff like that, Directing I, Acting I, Concepts of Design, Psychology 101, Child Psych 1, 2 levels of theater literature covering major works, and of course a Stagecraft course in each of the major areas.

Courses: Freshmen year 18 credits to start off with. then move up to max amount which is 21.  (Because of course you have to get the general requirements that the school asks for) besides doing the reg classes I would put:

SM 1- intro (all the basic stuff/info)
Unions class (we have a class that  is not a requirement for SMs but Im taking that is all about the Unions)
Theatre Mngt and producing -Intro
Intro to theatre with a lab (2 classes) split in half talk set, design, lighting, costume, etc.
Acting class
Theatre History
Directing class
Drafting class, possibly also an art class (incase they want to go into costumes, etc)
Senior Studio (help the actors with their senior showcase)

I would either make them take or suggest:
child psychology (or any psychology)
West civ class (history....I have my double major in it and it has come in handy quite a lot)
Music class
basic computer class (although this is something that you can create a forum for)
first aid and CPR (same as above)
speech

I would also try to schedule forums, where we could have guest speakers, possibly talk about job searching, interviewing, etc.

They would also work on a production a semester. Which would require weekly production meetings until we at least go into tech.

Who I would hire: Ppl in their specialized craft area with experience and of course teaching ability.

And then I completely agree with Tomorrow on the rest.
