Show suggestions (for HS)
« on: Jun 26, 2007, 09:50 am »
I am working in HS theatre and we want to get a show done right away next year. It should be a show that the freshmen can handle, but is not a bore to the veterans. Also a good show for a new sponsor/director. A low budget show would be nice. But I haven't the experience to suggest shows.

So, does anyone have any good plays that can be done in a month or two with some newbie actors and possibly director?

How many performers do you want to put on stage?  What's the male/female breakdown?

We've been doing shows with about 20, with 3-4 possible teachers acting, and 3-4 major student roles. Male/female is pretty much even barring a large group of males/females in the freshman class.

I was going to suggest The Fantasticks until the part about 20 people was added.

Try the Lazy Bee play search engine: http://www.lazybeescripts.co.uk/cgi-bin/Search.ASP

Disclaimer: I have not used this myself - but it seems like a really fabulous tool. If you wind up using it, I would LOVE to know your thoughts!

Joseph might be a good show for you guys. It has plenty of male parts, which can also be played by female. It a nice show for high schools because it can be done really well on a low budget as well as a big budget. There are 2 or 3 leads, the narrator can be split into two for high schools, and the parts are somewhat challenging. Also, it's a hard show for a director to screw up.

Whoops, I just realized you guys want a play, sorry lol.

Hrm. Something that my school does is what we call the Freshmen Play (of course).

We just take a bunch of little itty bitty skits that two or three people can be in and center them around a general theme.

It's a good way to get the freshmen started in theatre early, and interested as well, without boring the older crowd.

If you wanted to go for an actual play...I'm not too sure.

"Honk!" is a great musical for high schools.  It's a lot of fun and tame enough that no parents will complain.  If you don't want to do a musical I would suggest something simple that the parents will enjoy.

We're doing that at the summer camp I work for. I would say its a big juvanille for high school students but then again we did Jekyll and Hyde / Scarlet Pimpernel / JCS in my high school so my standards might be a bit high.

If you can get away with it. Jekyll and Hyde is great and fun.

How about a melodrama?  It gets your audience going well, and they're easy to stage.

Pioneer has a great selection of them with a wide range of characters, from small to large.

With only a few weeks rehearsal time, I'd look up their one-acts.

I'm flattered, but the answer is still no.
