new stage manager for upcoming play
« on: Dec 18, 2012, 10:08 pm »
Hi there,
I'm the stage manager for the play Midsummer's Night Dream. I'm completely new to being stage manager and only some idea of what I'm doing. I'm writing down all the managers and the different crews. Should I know what everything that's happening onstage and offstage? Should I write down everything?
I'm completely new at this and I need some pointing in the right direction.
If the sky's the limit, how did we make it to the moon?

The short answer is yes.

I'm sure things of this nature have been covered before, but I'm mobile at the moment so navigating for me kinda stinks. Darn fat fingers!

But yes. Wrote everything down. You need to notate where the actors are onstage and when they move and where they move to. You'll need to keep track of props and where they enter and exit, how they're used etc. you'll need To make note of costume changes and how fast they may need to happen. You'll need to know what goes on backstage in terms of backstage tracks for crew members, cast and what not.

This is a very broad view of what you'll need to concern yourself with. There's plenty more, but don't let it intimidate you. It's a lot. But it's fun, and its very rewarding. Keep asking questions it's the second best way to learn. Best way: dive in the deep end and start swimming!
