High School Musical
« on: Aug 30, 2007, 05:33 pm »
So the production company that I currently work for alongside doing my tech theatre college course has just got exclusive rights from Disney to put on High School Musical, lucky me; I've been given DSM. I've DSM'd before many a time, but all on smaller scale productions - this one should be in excess of £25,000. Any general advice anyone can give on working on larger scale productions seeing as I'm still a student and have never experienced something like this before. Cheers.

Don't get nervous over the amount they are spending on the show, how many cast members you have, etc.

It still the same process, just with a few more people thrown in.  Delgate responsibilities, stay calm and cool at all times, and have fun with it.  Sometimes trial by fire is the best way to learn, and you'll be just fine.  I promise.

As with any SM job, be proactive, and make lists. Then make lists of your lists, then lists of your lists of lists.

Seriously, as said before, ignore the bottom line - you don't have to worry about it - that's the producers job. It may be a big production, but provided you establish your lines of communication early in the piece, and keep proactive, you will find that things click together.

I'd be nervous too if I had to listen to HSM 8 hours a day for weeks...  ;D

All jokes aside... big shows are the same as little shows, just do what you do best, and you'll be fine.

I just finished doing 15 shows of High School Musical at Music Theatre of Wichita... We were one of 5 professional US theatres given rights to do it so it was a good experience but I swear, if I hear Bop to the Top one more time, I'll go nuts.

Oh no, you've done it now.
I was this close(denotes short distance with thumb and forefinger) to forgetting that song.

My venue almost got the tour this Nov., as they've lost one of the cities on their itinerary.  But it didn't work out, so its now on our next year's season.  I'll get to see what the hubbub is about then.

I watched the key number on YouTube the other day. I wanted to gouge out my eyes and puncture my eardrums with screwdrivers. My condolences - tho I hear it's a 'fun' production to put on? Not to dishearten you or bash on a show you might like, I just couldn't stand the production.

I'm a roadhouse, I just get tours in.  We don't mount any of our own productions.  I'll have the national tour, and they'll only be here two or three days.  I'll probably step in to watch it once, but if I don't like it there's nothing forcing me to watch the whole thing.
