Help With Highschool SM Work
« on: May 10, 2007, 09:12 am »
Well. I'm a Jr. in highschool and i just finished our school musical, Kiss Me Kate, about a month ago and last week finshed with The Hound of the Baskervilles. I'm in our Honors Drama class, and we're starting our end of the year project ,which for me since i've been the stagemanager for all our productions. So i have to write up a pamphlet for any SMs after me that might need help with how to go about:

-preparing for a show
-audtions
-rehearsals
-tech week and
-shows

and good tips for any of these? i'd love the help. not only would you be helping any up coming SMs...but me as well. This was my very first year being a SM. I've always just done tech work. But in one school year i've been the SM for 4 shows...and i hope they just keep on coming.

Thanks for all the help!  ;D

My advice would be to take a long, hard look at this forum, especially the Students and Novice section.  There are hundreds of posts regarding all of these things, and you can look at what everyone says (while also adding your own opinion of course) and find the answer that fits best.  There are other forms specifically dedicated to other people writing SM Pamphlets and Booklets for their schools, which could also benefit you.  I think your greatest resource would be to use this forum the best you can to find answers to these topics, and then if you need something specific just ask and hopefully we can all help you out  ;)

I'd also recommend a Stage Management textbook to keep around.  The pamphlet is a great idea for an "at-a-glance" type document.  As KC said this place is a great resource, and there are also tons of posts regarding stage management texts.  I think most are relatively inexpensive, too.  A copy of the "backstage handbook" may also be beneficial - a text meant more for technicians, though I've found it invaluable to have in my kit.
