Contact Methods
« on: Feb 18, 2017, 01:50 pm »
So I have a bit of a quandary; I've been searching for a PSM's email in order to contact them about shadowing a show, but I've been unable to find it anywhere. However, I have found them on Facebook, as well on Linkedin (although my experience with that is severely limited). My initial reaction is that I would never ever contact someone via Facebook, but I feel like I'm exhausting all my other options. Any ideas? Is it completely verboten to contact someone via DM on Facebook, or if I explain that I looked high and low without success for another way to contact them could it be excused?

Also - could you email someone else on the production staff and ask them for the PSM's email? Or is that also frowned upon? (They have a website with an email address to contact them, which the PSM does not).

Thanks for the help!

Have you tried contacting the theater itself? If someone I didn't already know personally wanted to shadow me, I would prefer to hear "hey we got a phone call/email from someone who wants to shadow you, here's their contact info" from someone at the theater, rather than a DM on Facebook. Most theaters have an admin office phone number on their website, and whoever answers that phone would be able to direct you to a production manager or the SM themselves, if they're a resident. That's way more official/"proper channels."
You will have to sing for your supper & your mortgage, your dental coverage & your children's shoes, over & over again while people in desk jobs roll their eyes the minute you start to complain. So it's a good thing you like to sing.

I'd try the theatre first as Bex said, but if you're going the social media route definitely do LinkedIn and not Facebook. LinkedIn is a professional networking platform, and as such work-related notes are appropriate for this venue.

I have received work-related messages on Facebook before and I ignore them. It also irritates me, and I'm less likely to respond to the person at all  (via any medium) if they send me a message on Facebook.  Facebook is where people go to see pictures of family/friends and argue about politics, not work.  ;)

I have been contacted on Facebook before . . . it's just one way to get a hold of me . . . I am fine with that.

But it will vary from person to person . . .

I have initiated and been contacted via social media before. I have no issue with it.

I do prefer email, but I understand that might be privileged information sometimes.
