Hello everybody!

I just got offered an internship position in which I would the stage managing a company's summer stock production of ''Pippin''. The show is going to be double cast.

I've stage managed shows before, but never a musical. I was just wondering what are some symbols or techniques that you use to notate dances. Are their any special symbols or abbreviations that are used?

If you could please help me, I would be so grateful!

Thank you,
                  Lauren

Hi Lauren,

I highly recommend using the search box. It's in the upper right corner. Type into the box
dance notation
then in the box next to it, select
"Entire Forum"
and then hit Search.

I just did that and got tons of hits from the site.

Best of luck!

There's a whole language for choreo called Labanotation, but I've always found when I'm on a musical that the dance captain or choreographer or assistant choreographer will take down choreo notes.  I tend to just note the "big" moments - particular formations rather than every last little step.  Unless you can read and write Labanotation, it's tricky to get it all down.

Thank y'all so much! I will search the forums and look more into Labanotation and see if I can possibly learn it.
