Minor?
« on: Nov 14, 2018, 03:56 pm »
I am currently majoring in theatre with an emphasis in stage management. I am required to have a minor to graduate and am looking for a minor that will help me with stage management. My current considerations are: Film and Video Studies, Journalism, Creative Writing, Literature and Film, and the Designed World.

Does anyone have an idea for a minor that may work well with stage management?

Thanks in advance!

I minored in drafting and design. It really helps with reading scenic plots quickly and accurately, envisioning those 2-d plots as 3-D scenery so I can head off potential problems at the pass, making accurate spike maps, and the like. It also gave me a good visual language to be able to understand and communicate with artists and designers in their own language. I can serve as a good "translator" from director-eese to designer-eese, when they're talking past each other.

I'd recommend a minor in business! I've found it very helpful when moving into production management as it relates to the business side of things, if that is something you are interested in!

I like the idea of a business minor, or perhaps there's something appropriate in a psychology or interpersonal communication minor of some sort?

I'm a double major, and can attest that expanding your studies beyond the theatre is an asset for stage management. Personally, I find my technical writing certificate to be one of the most valuable tools in my arsenal. Even if you minor in a different field, I'd highly recommend you to Business Communication. In particular, my training in writing "bad news messages" has proven to be very useful.

I personally never got around to a minor, but if I did I would have looked into Business or General Management. It depends on your interests, but a minor in Education couldn't hurt either.
I have an SM friend who is got a minor in Gender, Sexuality, and Women's studies because she was very interested in working on plays in that realm. If you have a genre of theater you prefer, consider getting a minor in that subject so you are more knowledgeable in that subject.
If you're considering working abroad, or on cruise ships, minoring in another language is great too!
