ALL-STATE AUDITIONS...i cant spell...
« on: Feb 24, 2008, 12:02 am »
ok so anyways, i'm auditioning to be a stage manager for the Illinois all-state production of hairspray. the guy said not to bring a port but instead to bring in exsamples of what i can do. so i have a few questions on what he might mean-
               1) whats the diffrens between what he wants and a portfolio
               2) is it alright for me to pretend i was dong a show but not actually do it...let me clearify... sence my TD already has the sceanse designed could i just pick a dif. show that my school wasnt doing and then design a set for it even though i wouldnt build it, or do a lighting plot for it? idk if it makes sense to yo guys but if not then just ignore this last question. -.-'

If you're going for an SM position, bring paperwork examples of paperwork you've done. A portfolio would be might bigger.

I don't think you should be bringing set designs or lighting plots unless they are going to as you to be a set designer or a lighting designer.

Yeah, a portfolio might be an entire promptbook, where a smaller folder of your paperwork would be more appropriate here.

I agree with StageMgr2Stars about not bringing designs.  I would say bring things like scene breakdowns, cue lists, etc., and maybe a couple of busy pages from a calling script.

Ditto with what the other two said.

That being said - good luck!!  I did props for Illinois All-State back when I was in high school and it was a fantastic experience.  If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me - though it was many years ago.  Let us know how it goes!!

I agree with all the other three.

I also did Illinois All-State when I was in High School. I actually ASM my junior year and then had the great experience to SM my senior year for it. I learned a lot from it both good a bad.

I don't know how your high school works, if you have the chance to take blocking or to take on the "SM" roles, but anything does help. Remember to be yourself when interviewing for it. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask me. I'm more then willing to help.
