POLICIES: Stage Management Manual - What to Include
« on: May 17, 2012, 03:27 pm »
I'm currently working with Production Management at the theatre I'm working at to write a stage management guide. We want to have a way to help orient the overhire stage managers we are bringing in. We want this to be a place the stage managers go to for answers when they have questions specific to our theatre.

My question - if you were a stage manager working in a new rep. theatre for the first time, what information would you like to see in this manual?

Hi Lauren,

I highly recommend using the search box in the upper right corner of your screen. Instead of "manual" type in "handbook" - there are ton of topics that cover the very question you're asking. Read through those and if you still don't find what you're looking for, please don't hesitate to ask!

Best of luck!

I had already done several searches before posting and none of them came up with anything particularly helpful.

I was just trying to get several other perspectives on what would be helpful to include.

hopefully you are searching the entire site, not just the forum you were in - I typed in both words (manual and handbook) and got several pages of info - hope this helps

There's a really great book from the CAEA here in Canada called 'Stage Managing the Arts in Canada' it may be slightly out of date (as you should always have extra floppy disks around) but that would be a great book for you to check out to get some tips, as it is actually used as a reference in both the Stage Managing the arts conferences as well as University programs. Other than that it would just be nailing down/outlining the specifics of your theatre, ie. where important things are, who to call for maintenance issues -- all the quirks that only someone working there for years would know.
