SOUND: Sound effects
« on: Jan 28, 2008, 09:32 pm »
My director has just told me he would quite like a sound effect for a decapitation. Where would I get me one of those? Any help appreciated!

Get your sound guy to record someone with a meat cleaver banging into a nice thick juicy bit of meat. That will be a nice *THUNK*.

Sound effects are not really the sort of thing you just go out and find on the net (if you want decent ones) - you build them up by layering different sounds over each other, to try and get exactly the sound you want.

My problem is I have no recording equipment. But a friend helped me out and sent me a link where they do have sound effects. So for future reference :)

Depending on where you are located, you can probably find free lance foley artists who love work like that.  Call the nearest film production company and see if they can give you some contacts.
Stage managing is getting to do everything your mom told you not to do - read in the dark, sit too close to the TV, and play with the light switches!

TBH - the free stuff you get of the net is hardly ever realistic. Even when they are actual recordings of the event in question, when put into the context of a theatrical performance, often feel wrong. If you plan on doing a lot of SFX work, get a decent multi-track audio application, and really play around with layering and enveloping sounds.

Amusing in the context of needing a sound effect for decapitation.
I guess you can give your body to theater as much as you could give it to science...
