COMMUNICATION: Props List and Production Manager
« on: Apr 23, 2009, 03:53 am »
This is part of a long story....
My short question, as long as I'm communicating with the props master, does my Production Manager need a props list?

yes, it would be a very nice courtesy  to give the PM a copy.  If the PM doesn't want one, they will tell you, but in my career, I have never had a PM say "no, i don't want to see this."

I usually flick a copy of my props list and updates to it to the PM when I e-mail it to the props manager - my PM doesn't read it in-depth, but it's an easy way of him being aware that we're on top of things.  He doesn't insist on it but likes to get them.

Definitely offer it to them.  And if they don't want a hard copy, then at least send an digital version just in case.

I'm curious though, if there are extenuating circumstances. You said this was part of a larger story. I think without some of those details most people would say you should offer.

To be on the safe side, I usually send the list to everyone.  And any revisions, everyone gets. (By everyone, I mean the whole production staff). Sometimes, props overlap with set or costume needs.  So it's just FYI for all.  If they don't want it, they disregard it.

I agree with the folks here.  It certainly can't hurt to keep everyone in the loop.  In fact, if there is an item that the director wants to add that may end up being a budget issue, then the PM would certainly need to know.
