PROPS: Blood Recipe
« on: Sep 19, 2012, 02:28 pm »
Hey all!  I'm looking for a good blood recipe that will not be sticky, hopefully not dye the actors skin or costumes, and be ok if it gets in an actors eyes (fairly inevitable).  Any suggestions would be super helpful-the cheaper the better!

Hi! I did a show with a few different kinds of blood, depending on when/where they were used.  We had lots of luck with a mixture of chocolate syrup, blood gel, and gentle laundry detergent. Came out of costumes pretty quickly, though I do recommend soaking the costumes immediately in a tub of water to make sure the stain doesn't set!

For blood that was on the actress' face and hands, we mixed the gel blood with baby shampoo. It's less irritating than detergent, but it's a bit runny. Don't know if that's a problem for what you're doing.
I personally would like to bring a tortoise onto the stage, turn it into a racehorse, then into a hat, a song, a dragon and a fountain of water. One can dare anything in the theatre and it is the place where one dares the least. -Ionesco

There was a huge discussion on this some time ago - try a search, there were a dozen recipes for stage blood posted.

GradSM, I saw a fight choreographer that I work with a lot today (and who has done many, many blood effects) and asked him this question. He said that there is a kind of blood designed to go in eyes, called Kryolan, but it is expensive and more like eye drops (it can create an effect of someone crying blood). His suggestion was to create something with light corn syrup and jello or kool-aid powder, thinned if needed. It really depends on what the blood needs to do- spray, drip, etc.

My current show uses Reel blood, original version, thinned with water and it sprays in actor's face without bothering his eyes, but it is not designed to get in your eyes- the bottle instructions says to flush eyes if you get any blood in them. It is a little sticky but not hard to wash off of scenery, and comes out of clothes with soap and a little OxyClean.
