I HAVE to share this
« on: Mar 16, 2007, 11:10 am »
So I've just finished a tour that was geared toward young kids for Black History Month. SO we were going into schools, mostly in the NYC area. There was this one school (which shall remain nameless) where we were playing in the gymacafetorium. We were setting up our set and sound etc. during breakfast and the very nice lunch ladies had breakfast set up on the edge of the stage. So we were setting up around them, then came the time for the show...

During our show, the VERY nice lunch ladies were making sandwiches ON STAGE. We were informed that they made the lunch sandwiches at a specific table on the stage every day during that time and if they didn't lunch would not be served on time. SO during our show, seated stage left just behind one of our central set pieces (that did not block them from view) they made sanwiches. And my actors (who I will confess were troupers) performed the entire show around them.

I just thought I'd share this because I find it hilarious.

:o  Wow.  That is all sorts of astounding.

And now that I think about it, just like the lunch ladies I remember.

ROFLMAO.

I have seen lunch ladies like that, in fact, whilst I was touring a school show, one of the lunch ladies came on stage and asked the actors if they wanted a cup of coffee or tea - I believe she said "Could I get anyone here a cup of tea of coffee... You are working so hard, and it looks so hot up here". My brilliant cast replied in charactor, and we got some great laughs.

That's a great mental image!

Yeah, I remember doing a children's theatre tour that played at a High School in Los Angeles.  Well, a lot of the schools out there have open parts of the school - this one had a huge outdoor courtyard, surrounded by the classrooms, that served as both hallways and lunchroom.  I had to drive the truck through hundreds of milling students to get to the 'loading dock'.  During the morning it was fun, as the students had no interest in getting out of my way, so I had to -literally- gently shove them aside with the front bumper of my 13 ton vehicle.  It was school time performance, and we got done during the High School's lunch break.  That was even more fun, as they had set up the lunch tables right next to the truck and had lined up the trash cans under the truck.  I had students perched all over it, and it took twice as long to navigate out than it had to come in - because of the density of the student crowd.  In hindsight I would have loved to see an arial view of a 26' truck in a sea of students, but at the time I was petrified as they wouldn't get out of the way, and I was sure that I was going to run over at least one of them.
